NEW CITRUS!! Limequat lakeland American oil beetle

Limequat - Lakeland

Its been a great week for us here, new shipment of citrus came in, We managed to get our hands on the lakeland limequat which Ive been wanting for some time now. Whenever the limequats come around its usually the eustis, our normal supplier does not carry the lakeland so we were very lucky to find this one available. The next mission will be to source the tarvaes,  part of our goal is to locate old/odd varieties that the industry has neglected, often at times for the oddest reasons, but I digress.

We just added a new berry bush to our collection!! ( cherry red current ) and a rhubarb ( crimson cherry  ).
It will be interesting to compare the two rhubarbs we have ( Canada red + crimson cherry ) as when I was growing up I never knew there was more then one type.

I stumbled across this little guy the other day ( american oil beetle ), this is the first time Ive seen one, very strange looking thing, almost seemed to stop and watch me as I brought the camera closer, his colour was the most vibrant blue with almost an iridescence as it stumbled quickly along the grass.
American oil beetle

Work has begun on the new greenhouse, pathways have been mulched, hydroponic tomato system is being setup, display racks are full, plants are potted up and most are ready for sale!!.
and to top it all off, we have a week/two of 20c+ weather!. Cant beat that in spring, especially for Canada.
This coming week we will be placing an order with our new sub-tropical fruit tree supplier, as well as sourcing an organic fertilizer we can start to sell + work on our rabbit/chicken shelter.
Spring is never a boring time round here.

Are You New to Aquaponics

If youre a newcomer to AP and are maybe wondering if it is for you and your situation, then maybe we can shed some light on the subject for you.

There are a stack of sites out there in the Weird and Wreckless,Wilderness that we call the internet and the two of us at the Digest have taken it on ourselves to bring as many as we can find for You to Digest. So please stick around and enjoy.....

Lets start with The basic flood and drain aquaponics system is the most common system

you know someones new when

Dont you hate it when a book or something youre reading starts with something then they cut to something else without finishing the sentence?

=]

Anyway so I got at my stop at 6:40 today to catch bus one that comes around at 6:50.  Why?  Because theres this really retarded Christian girl who talks to me and is usually on the 7:05.  I dont hate her...she hasnt done anything wrong to me or has physically hurt anyone (although she does make a lot of fat jokes toward this other girl who I think is retarded...but a little less).  Both think its their way or no way (sorry no highway)...youre stupid and its wrong...its just the bigger one doesnt live it and preach it to the entire planet...nor does she take the bus.  Besides were friends likely due to familiarity...we go back to 2nd grade.

7:15...class in 15 minutes.  Nobody is here.  Why am I the only one who took early classes on Tuesday and Thursday?  FML.  Im the only one that took late classes too huh?  I wish people were here.  I have the table that everyone likes by the tree =]

Oh yeah and what I was originally talking about.  You know you have a bus driver thats new when he doesnt quite know the route.  Bus 1 (like 93 and a few other buses) has some shitty stops.  Im referring to the Myrtle stop going McClellan bound.  Yeah its hidden under some trees and cars parked around it.  I was sitting down and went flying forward.  Prior to that, we were going down Auburn and we totally almost missed the turn at College Oak...as in we were all the way in the right lane and he just kinda moved over at the last minute...blocking traffic (good thing their light stayed red to go straight).  I feel really bad for this guy...they should at least give new people a map or GPS.

So Im thinking Im allergic to Herbal Essence hair stuff.  I used it for about a week (not even fully) and now I have burns on my scalp and neck.  It could be that or this gel I havent used since I was little...but Im doubting it was the gel since I dont recall having burns from it...or even a mix of the two.  Either way Im going gel free for a while till my head recovers.

Fixing our failing school system

Im glad this is being brought to light, I have felt this way for years, the school system has been flawed and most teachers seem unwilling to admit anything should be done, I dont discredit the idea of school,
education is key, but Im fed up with publicly funded (prison like) institutions who are to scared to make a change, even if 50 percent of there business model is failing. ( on top of things they want raises, extended vacations, and paid personal expenses increased every year or so, lol. Now, I have no problem paying taxes for any of these things providing the teachers are worth it and the system works, but if your failing the same amount year after year and not doing anything about it IMO you dont deserve anything, well.... maybe a wake up call. )

Its like this man said, they wont even listen to basic science/statistics/math or analyze/solve a problem, just keep repeating it over and over, and we pay for this as taxpayers, I say we because we are a just as much like the states in these terms as they are like us, North american standards.

At least people are talking about this, change is in the air, and while it seems every government  organization is falling apart, corruption abound and greed infested, there is an awakening happening,
things will get better.

A NEW TWIST ON THE DEBATE

It seems we cant go a couple of days without Global Warming issues and opinions taking prime newspaper, radio and TV space. The latest finding coming from the E.U. which adds a new dimension to the opinions being formed. We all have our own opinion or gut feeling about global warming and it really is very disconcerting when we read some of the reports. So we need to be as informed as possible so that our personal considerations have legitimacy.

For this reason I felt a need to share this latest report  so that people following this blog can read absorb or reject as you see fit. However the end result is not to have an opinion but to have an understanding so that we can draw conclusions that will benefit our needs, and the needs of our families and communities.

So here is the link, the rest is up to you.

Now to work:
Can Aquaponics Benefit You?
Im sure that youve heard the term hydroponics before. If you have you probably associated with watery produce. Back when it was first invented it was supposed to be the next big thing, that was until people started eating the food. Lately, theres been some buzz around whats called aquaponics.

Locavores, SPIN Farmers, and Pumpkineers--Oh My!
Even Newark, N.J., is becoming a grow-it-yourself paradise
For many readers, the spring has just sprung and the grass is riz, as the poet said. Its time, in other words, to turn our attention to growing things or, more to the point, to words related to growing things.

A column last year introduced some climate-friendly food terms, such as foodshed, the area where a person or family can obtain locally grown food; food miles, the distance that a food item travels from its source to the consumer; and locavore, a person who eats only locally grown food. (I didnt know it at the time, but it turns out...

Aquaponics and light choices to grow food thats worth the time and $$
First of all Im posting this here because I plan to do the following as an organic flood table setup (using Bio-Bizz), or as an aquaponics setup....possibly even considering soil filled tray with drippers. The second reason I am posting here is to avoid all the senseless banter Id probably get in the lighting forum for inquiring about LED lights. And lastly, because I highly value the input of the people that hang around this forum.

Biogas and How to Make a DIY Anaerobic Digester (Video)
by Sami Grover, Carrboro, NC, USA
Biogas and anaerobic digestion made number one in HowStuffWorks list of wacky alternative energy, and poop-to-energy biogas projects have proven popular on Discovery News too. From biogas in Haitian slums to green gas being sold direct to UK consumers, there are plenty of examples of innovative projects turning biodegreadable waste into both energy and fertilizer. But how can someone at home get a piece of the action? The Urban Farming Guys have just released a great video showing how they built a DIY biogas digester using little more than some tanks, piping, rubber seals and a grinder. Oh, and a whole load of cow poop.

Aquaponics Project to Provide Fish, Vegetables
Today was the last official day of our aquaponics setup. If you arent familiar with the system, you need to talk to Rev. Jeff Greer at Grace Chapel about it. He speaks with the passion and dreamers view of what this system could mean to this community in the future.

A small team took a random set of resources and have put together a fully functional hydroponic vegetable garden and fish pond together to work symbiotically to produce what could be a monthly harvest of food.

ANOTHER NEW WEEK OR A WEEK CLOSER TO CHRISTMAS

MONDAY

In my search for todays material, I stumbled upon Yahoo through a Google search and found a question and answer section. I have listed it below. Unfortunately the question/answer bit with a request for information about A/P had closed. I say Unfortunately, because they have some sort of vote on what is the best answer and this is the one that is printed. Well as you will see the answer is Ummm... garbage IMHO. But what do I know..... Anyhow Im trying to make contact with the person who asked the question so that I can offer her a real answer(or Guess What - A Blog with real answers). Please wish me luck... Oh yes its listed below....

Work Time......

WARNING WARNING
We are hoping to gain lottery funding for a large aquaponics unit (fish farm combined with hydroponic plant growing/water purification).
Incredible Edible Todmorden www.incredible-edible-todmorden.co.uk is a local food project in a tiny town in the pennine hills of northern England. In the meantime we are setting up a small scale pilot project to get our hands in. Here it is under construction.

New pool now in place, still a lot to do over the next few weeks as we start to preare for the winter (did we have a summer) we had some medium / gravel which turned out not to be suitable a simple test show you how not to make the same mistake, even if the man at the shop said it is ok does not mean it is.

You get 100% organic veggies, cannabis and organic seafood from this system! The fish provide all the nutrients that the plants need so no extra fertilization is required...

Aquaponics Update #13 – Combined Filters, More Plants in Tank, Trying to Increase Bacterial Growth

Getting a group to agree on just about anything can be challenging. Getting them to agree on the definition of something they are passionate about could be way passed challenging. Getting a group of 565 passionate people with various experience levels who are scattered around the world that can randomly come and go from the conversation to agree on that definition is, well, a superhuman task.

16th, 2010 – Today, HobbyGardner.com editors released the free DIY Aquaponics Build Guide. In this resourceful new guide, gardening enthusiasts will learn about the aquaponics style of growing plants, whether their interest is in vegetables, flowers or medicinal.

Can i use mollies in aquaponics?
i have a 10 gallon tank with 9 adult mollies and 3 babys and im looking to start a aquaponics system using the mollies im going to have a grow bed above the tank with a drip system i plan on growing peppers and tomatoes any info would be great
We look at efforts to save tigers from extinction in the wild, as Russia prepares to hold a key conservation summit ++ Genetically modified corn takes root in Mexico ++ A super efficient farming operation, right in the middle of London ++ And a controversy over German plans to export nuclear waste to Russia.

There’s a national movement afoot to grow more food in cities. And the Milwaukee area stands out as an urban agricultural hotbed, as raised gardens multiply in backyards, empty lots and community spaces. Another promising piece of urban food production is called “aquaponics”.

  • We built our first AP system in April-May 2009. I forgot to mention it in the video, but the credit for the design for this system goes to our friend Paul Range. My husband tweaked it slightly to fit our backyard. Much thanks to Tim Mann of Friendly Aquaponics for his advice in improving the system. Our goals in the next few weeks
  • It is often pointed out that it would be a good idea to have some basic rules-of-thumb for Aquaponics gardening. Why? Because they will help in getting started without needing to spend weeks researching. The finer points can be studied and implemented as the project goes along.
  • This summer was my first time growing with aquaponics. In this video I am using a 50 gallon fish tank filled with goldfish and an algae eater. The water is pumped to the top grow bed, which drains to the second grow bed, which returns to the fish tank.
Enough already, Im getting cut-and-paste cramps....
There really is a lot to get through among that lot, so please try to enjoy yourselves...
Ill be back in a couplea days. Be good to yourselves - and each other....
