Grandma is a fag

Grandma, mom, Danny, and I went to K-mart the other day...and I told grandma that if she did this one thing (dont even remember) then she is a fag. She then went on to tell me later that she is a fag. Then she wanted to buy this stupid blow up penguin thing and I told her that shed get chlamydia if she bought it. She yelled out in the store that she wanted chlamydia.

LOL fail grandma.

So the picture on the left is a 24 month onsie... It says Stud Muffin seeks cupcakes. *Must be sweet. I totally wish I had a kid so I could have an excuse to buy it lol. Its effing cuuute. I mean the cutest thing I have ever seen for a baby boy (or lesbian baby I guess...if youre that into your kid being a lesbian).

Oh anyway...earlier that day we went to Frys. I asked where I could find Nero or any other DVD ripping software. The guy went on about how it didnt void copyright. Do I look stupid? I mean wtf!!! So now fully irritated he tried to get me to buy Roxio...which I beyond HATE. I gave him the stupid look (the punch you face Tom always talks about but times 100) and just turned up my iPod and walked away with Nero.

Then I saw Kelly and was like ZOMG KELLY I LOVE YOUUUZ

anyway...Ima go steal some candy and a soda from my diabetic fag of a grandmother XD

A HAPPY APRIL TO ALL

No jokes or tricks....Straight to work and to kick things of, let me say if are not on Sylvia Bernsteins lists, you are missing out on a wealth of information that could be vital to anyone interested in Aquaponics. So Ive included her latest for your perusal and the rest is up to you:-

Charlie Price at TEDx

Have you ever seen a video that so blew you away that when it ended your mind started racing to figure out how to share it with the most number of people possible?  I just had that experience this morning, so after sharing this video with the community site, Facebook, and Twitter, I am now sharing it with you!

The video shows Charlie Price who runs

Aquaponic Gardening Workshops

Sylvia Bernstein teaching aquaponics
Over the past two years I’ve taken several aquaponics workshops and classes, and taught several myself.  One thing that I’ve learned is that, while an aquaponics system is fairly easy to operate once it is up and running, a beginner has a lot to learn at the outset in order to be successful.  Here is what I’ve discovered that a beginner can comforatably

Aquaponics vs. Hydroponic nutrients

I’ve gardened in dirt for many, many years in a variety of climates (Illinios, Ohio, Colorado, California) so when I discovered hydroponics 7 years ago I thought it was amazing.  Imagine, no dirt, no weeds, fast growth, never needing to worry about when to water and when to fertilize.  Best part was because the grow beds are portable I could “garden” where ever I wanted.  But there was always that nagging issue of the nutrients.  Most nutrients in hydroponics are based on mineral salts, which could be ecologically harvested and purified, but I’m afraid the vast majority just aren’t.  It always felt a little like I was feeding my plants with a chemical

Aquaponic Fish: To Eat or Not To Eat
Yesterday I was asked why someone would grow aquaponically.  I went through the usual reasons that we probably all use to justify the time and money we spend on our obsession – organic produce that is sustainably grown, the ability to garden anywhere, regardless of soil quality, without mess or weeds, etc., etc, etc.  I found myself wrapping it all up, however, with the heartfelt exclamation “but the real reason is that...

Aquaponics: Certified Organic Without Soil?

Believe it or not, you cannot be certified USDA organic if you grow crops in a soilless environment in the U.S.

Dirt = Organic…WHY???

Bevan Suits of Access to Aquaponics has launched a righteous war of soil semantics with the National Organic Standards Board.  On December 17 he sent a letter to Valerie Francis, Executive Director, and Jeff Moyer, Chairman, which I’m excerpting below. Therell be more from Sylvia over the next few issues

DIY urban bathtub aquaponics system
Aquaponics just might be the ultimate closed-loop food production system. A healthy aquaponics system can provide its lucky owner with fresh fish and fresh organic vegetables year round, for very little ongoing cost. Getting an aquaponics system set up, however, can be costly. There’s lots of off-the-shelf systems to choose from nowadays, but they cost a bundle.                                              ...oooOooo...

First Past The Post
I’m always on the look-out for early varieties and was recently introduced to realseeds.co.uk by one of the Tomato Club Members.
The Race Is On!
It seems that they have a very early cherry/bush variety called Latah which was developed in Idaho, USA for short seasons. That’s a bit like the summer in the UK!
I’ve ordered some of these seeds and intend to grow this variety alongside Red Alert and one or two other early fruiting varieties to see which is the earliest. I’ll keep you up to date with the results.

Try Sprouts
If you want to grow nutritious and tasty fresh vegetables during the cold months, sprouts are the answer to your prayers. In just a few days, a handful of seeds will turn into several servings of crunchy sprouts. It doesn’t get more fresh and local than that!
By Tabitha Alterman and Barbara Pleasant
Sprouts can be grown easily in hemp or flax bags. And they come in a wider variety than you may realize. Try multi-colored purple radish sprouts or crisp sprouted peas.

Best Vegetables to Grow in the Shade
Even in shaded conditions, you can bask in great garden harvests if you choose the right crops and make a few easy adjustments.
By Colleen Vanderlinden
For successful growing in the shade, remove low-hanging branches from nearby trees, use raised beds and liners to discourage tree roots from wicking water away from crops, and use reflective mulches to give plants more light.

A Yarn About Microcontrollers And Textile Projects

Yesterday’s post on this blog was about the Tetris Shirt, a textile computing project. Today’s post will follow up on that topic with a couple related ideas and articles.
Conductive yarn

First up is the primary focus of the post -- ‘smart yarn. A few days ago I read a Wired article titled "This Smart Yarn Makes Gadget Interactions Magical." The article discusses a relatively unique approach to textile computing projects. This novel type of yarn combines conductive steel fiber and non-conductive yarn fiber.
"A new project from Royal College of Art student Yen Chen Chang explores what happens when you replace glass, metal and plastic with textile control mechanisms. The result? A totally new way to interact with our everyday devices. Using conductive yarn made from 80 percent polyester and 20 percent stainless steel...Chang knit and crocheted a series of
objects that control devices by pulling, squeezing and stroking. When manipulated, the overlap of the metal fiber causes the textile to change conductivity which is then measured by an Arduino and communicated to the gadgets...Chang developed the
Squeezy Juicer, a juicer that only works when you squeeze an oversized knit ball between two people. The faster you squish the ball, the quicker you’ll have your orange juice...“When you integrate different sensing technology into today’s electronics, you can make something look totally different,” he says
."
Dezeens article explains how Changs conductive yarn came to be.
"Knit Sensors was Yen Chen Changs graduation project from the Design Products course at Londons RCA, and involved experimenting with conductive textiles to provide a more tangible alternative to touch screens and other typical interfaces...The designer began his project by exploring the possibility of knitting standard electrical cables into self-supporting structures, which he realised generated a small amount of resistance because of the complexity of their intertwined surfaces. Recognising that manipulating the surfaces affected the amount of resistance, Chang began to explore the possibility of weaving with conductive yarns connected to sensors that translate actions like stretching and pulling into voltage changes."
Yarn glove electronics
Two other websites to look at if this yarn is of interest to you are the alphafit and Eeonyx sites. The alphafit technology involves pressure sensitive textiles. The company states:
"For the first time it is now possible...to measure surface pressure on three-dimensional variable surfaces. The filament itself measures the pressure. We have developed a textile system that works without the need of inserting any industrial sensors. This measurement system can be integrated into any textile."
Eeonyx makes an electronics-friendly yarn that is says consists of,
"...a conductive polymer coated yarn with precisely tunable electrical resistance and excellent uniformity of linear resistance. EeonYarn™ is durable, able to stand up to real world conditions of abrasion and repeated washings. Applications for EeonYarn™ include radar absorbing fabrics and composites, resistive fabric heaters, and woven pressure sensors."
Adafruit tilt sensor
More readily available, or maybe lower cost, textile microcontroller (MCU) project supplies and techniques are described in Adafruits datasheet titled "Handcrafting Textile Sensors From Scratch." This PDF document shows a whole slew of supplies and tools for textile sensor projects. It shows the basics of making textile sensors such as a pressure sensor matrix and a tilt sensor. A worthwhile read for someone interested in textile computing projects. Another great background guide for this topic is Katies "Soft Electronics Tutorial."

Two other random textile computing items Ill throw in here at the end are the Lilypad Arduino, an alternative to the Adafruit FLORA mentioned in yesterdays blog post, and ChipChicks article titled "Dragon Inspired Outfit Hits the Fashionware Runway Show" which has some pretty interesting projects. The Lilypad has been used in many projects -- just Google   Lilypad project   and youll find more wearable computing projects than you have time to read about. The ChipChick article, although not solely about MCU fashion items, does talk about relevant products, saying:
"CE Week may be over but the fashion will always live on. A one stop shop for NY’s geek-erati, but this year they got treated to a bit of high fashion as well. The runway show combined wearable fitness, one of a kind high tech fashion design, robotics, and program for young kids...The Dragon Queen is a collaborative design evolved from Victoria Secret Wings...The dragon interacts with the audience through a mobile app that controls its movement through WiFi.
Lilypad Arduino
The dragon’s power comes from a combination of an EZ robot controller, a speaker, 3D printed eyes, and LED strip lights...Strokes and Dots is an outfit inspired by early modern art but it combines speed, graphic design and technology. The LEDs woven into the fabric are motion and sound responsive
..."
The textile computing world is big and getting bigger every day! What project would you like to do with fabrics and microcontrollers? If you do a lot of fabric work and want help with the microcontroller or electronics part of your project, consider coming to a Humboldt Microcontrollers Group meeting and explaining what youd like to do. Or ask questions you have about how MCUs work or what their capabilities are. Well do our best to help you out, and it might result in you heading out into a whole new world of fabric projects.

Aquaponics Are we on a mission

So many of us start in Aquaponics as a way of feeding ourselves or saving a little money or better feeding our family. However some people, some who started out for one reason became aware that through A/P they could possibly help this planet and they became driven to use Aquaponics as a tool to help others.

So I started to go through my notes to see who, what, where and how. Heres what I found and I hope you enjoy.

“Living Food BankTM” to Provide Fresh Fish and Vegetables in Haiti

Luke’s Mission has extensive experience  using aquaponics, both in the US and in Haiti.

Vancouver Island Universitys ongoing efforts in the direction of sustainability are evident inside a preferred aquaponics mission happening

During a recent trip to New York City, Felipe from GlobalGiving stopped by Brooklyn Rescue Mission for a quick visit. Here is his postcard from the field

I  am writing to tell you about an exciting new opportunity for Brooklyn
Rescue Mission! We have been selected by the GlobalGiving Foundation to
participate in its Urban Farming Open Challenge

Our Mission Statement...
Provide support for those people who are most in need,
following Jesuss example.
AND
Attain sustainability and teach others to do the same.

Organization dedicated to promote Aquaponics in Europa. French, English, Nederlands

Olomana Gardens is a permaculture farm dedicated to serving the local  community as a demonstration farm for modern, sustainable food growing systems suitable for small-scale farms and even food production for residential lots.

The aim was to develop a system that could be widely replicated in economically blighted regions, used as a cost-effective vehicle to teach the public the importance of growing the right fruits and vegetables to ensure a healthy diet

Our intention is to empower people through the education of food production, nutrition, and cultural integration. The demographic that we would like to impact first would be the communities residing in regions on our Earth that are suffering from famine, disease, and malnutrition

The training is being conducted by Challenger and 16 ANC members are completing a Certificate II in Aquaculture.  It is planned that ANC members, once they have finished their training, will become mentors for other aboriginal communities to start their own aquaponics systems

Kijiji grows (kee-gee-gee) is a collaboration of farmers, artists, engineers, builders and educators who advocate for aquaponic gardening. Our mission is to bring aquaponics to the San Francisco Bay Area and change lives through urban sustainable growing systems in schools, homes and businesses

I really enjoyed the conference. It helped me see that my wife and I could contribute to serving the poor in ways that we didnt imagine. Theres enough information given to get started in Aquaponics. One day I hope to develop similar projects in Kenya and Nigeria.

An Australian sustainability collective has come up with a novel approach to bringing ecological organic food production into our cities. Their design is fast, efficient, cheap, demountable, and scalable. Welcome to the urban farming revolution proposed by CERES.

Build an aquaponics system to educate Central Brooklyn residents on the benefits of urban farming, healthy eating and improving healthy food access for residents in the communities where they live

Right, I think youll get the idea. There are a lot of people out and about who are striving to help my/your planet. Makes me feel pretty darn good inside.

So on that Note Ill bid you a fond fairwell....(O.K. So Im going all Mushy. So What)

From E-Zine Articles:
You can design an aquaponics at home system that can produce fresh organic vegetables and raise fish at the same time. Taking a lesson from fish farming otherwise known as aquaculture and the practice of raising plants without soil known as hydroponics a marriage of the two worlds are created to form aquaponics.
Aquaponics at home can be a very basic system designed to grow a small herb garden or an aggressive system designed to raise organic vegetables to feed an entire household.

Well, getting ready for some new catfish so we moved the aquarium outdoors to become the new Quarantine Aquaponics system.
We decided the big aquarium indoors was too much moisture for the house and we needed more storage space in the spare room. Well why not set it up outside? I did add a cover in front to keep the sun off the tank as the algae would otherwise have taken over and heated up the tank quickly.

It is not difficult to design a basic aquaponic system that can be placed indoors or outdoors. The options you have are to purchase a readymade kit or get the components from your local hardware and hobby supply stores and build the unit yourself.
What are the components of a basic aquaponics system?
  1. A fish tank with fish, the size you select will be determined by where you locate it and the scope of your system.
  2. A grow bed with plants, there is no limit here in terms of what you can grow, it will depend on your goals, the type of water flow and the space you have dedicated to the aquaponics system.

From Can You Feed Your Family With Aquaponics?
Thanks for all these great aquaponic links and ideas.  Thank you, Jag, for the film clip.  The man, Hobie, whom the speaker is most directly conversing is a long time friend of mine.  The plant he is featuring, taro, is an important one of our staples.
My favorite part of focusing my efforts and concerns on food production, is that it makes me happy.  Cultivating life around us, is so much more joyful and fulfilling than stressing about the rise of fascism and an impending economic collapse.  ... I do both, rejoice in the abundant biology around me and stress about the digression in our society.  I like the happy part best, so I place the most energy there.
Our aquaculture system should be up and running within the month.  Hopefully, the rainwater feed will minimize the need for the pump system that will be in place.  Well let you know how well we succeed.....

Now From GOArticles:With the tough economic circumstances were all facing, getting inexpensive and quality foods and products is a growing challenge for even the most experienced shoppers. Prices are through the roof to the point where it seems you have to spend a fortune to have a healthy diet. More inexpensive products are always of lower quality, this holds true for food as well. You can now get the best organic fruits, vegetables, and fish… plus save money at the same time! Where does this come from? It comes from your own farm…

Project 365

And were back from the dead...again!  Really I havent had much to blog about.

Now my first freshman year of college (back in 2009) is when I started this blog.  We were supposed to do a 365 day project as well but most of us didnt.  Now Im here again thanks to Chatterbox Forums (Hi guys!)  This time, I will post a picture a day. Forgive me for these first few days. New phone and I have yet to successfully transfer photos to anything but Facebook. And then...lost my camera.

Now 2014 is supposed to be special...because its supposed to be the year I grow up about as much as I will grow up.  I dropped my second major and will be focusing on on my one and only, computer programming. I am putting myself on a weight loss plan AND gave myself dreads.

On the first of this year, I was supposed to go on a fast.  I wasnt a weight loss fast or anything.  More of a...spiritual fast to start off the new year.  Well I will be likely starting that tomorrow.  I used stress as an excuse but no more!  Nope.  None of that this year.

My dreads arent really dreads yet.  Theyre babies.  Not locked up at all.  Even with all their fuzzies, I still like em.

Anyway... Im back!

A Life Changing Event

...didnt happen to me at all.

I must say...the best thing about web logs is that you get to read about what is on a strangers mind. Often times, this includes full details and such which makes it more interesting. This can encourage people to be brave or to let go...like it is doing me now.

Im unhappy world. Im unhappy that I live within city limits (something I cant fix for a while) in a teeny place (something I can fix in the near future) in complete chaos and no game plan (something I can bitch about now.) I have always lived in the suburbs but have taken about 100 steps backwards when I moved from an unincorporated county to these city limits...where the same problems are but many rules arent followed (example...in county you will get a fine for "watering the sidewalk" but in the city which is also part of the same county facing the same water problems, you can help that sidewalk grow big and strong by watering it at noon in the middle of summer with no discouragement.)

I do like the fact I can hear lots of birds chirping at least but not without the gentle sounds of automobiles in the background...

But this is home for now...unfortunately. I have decided finally to say "hi there fuck you Im doing what I want."

This isnt like me...I usually sort of listen to what people say and take their thoughts into consideration. Im tired of being told no.

no you cant do gymnastics (youre too fat)
no you cant have a dog (because I said so...dont care if they kill it)
no dont get that soap (because I dont like how it doesnt smell like ____ when it comes out of the wash)
no I wont spend $$ for horse riding lessons (your sister needs $$$$ for modeling that she probably wont stick with)
no you cant do girl scouts with your friends (because my friend is a troop leader *places me in with a bunch of strangers*)
no you cant do martial arts (Youre a girl and must do scouts)
no dont get that milk
no this
no that
no
no
NO

But of course it is a total mystery to everyone why I have a problem now with being told no I cant do blah blah blah. Yeah I fight it and fight it hard.

I will be starting my life turn around probably next month when I start a nursery for some of the plants I have wanted forever. A bunch of it is food (I have absolutely no experience growing veggies but have a green thumb otherwise) but a few of them are just things I like (including but not limited to a Douglas fir, California oak, and a Korean maple.) I have considered just packing up and leaving in the night because Im truly tired of that wonderful word no (as well as sorry...dont say sorry unless youre going to fix or compensate fully for whatever you did. Then dont do it again.) I will probably lie to a few people to get an apartment but hey, I promise no harm done. I want to keep my dogs.

Then, Im finishing up school or moving to the country...whichever I have time to do first. Then come the chickens, the pond, the horses, and maybe a pig or a cow but yes some goats.

Im tired of waiting for life to happen. It is clear to me that someone is always gonna say no and just be in the way. Well if someone loves me...truly...they wont say no without reason anymore...they will just come for the ride.

A plethora of AP Plans

A plethora of AP Plans are around and probably I would fill this blog for the next 12 months with sites and blogs showing and describing them. I Wish I Was a SAHM

Or a mom or had the intent of being a stay at home wife.  Im not though which is why I had to give up.  Husband and I talked about my stress levels for a while.  Made my own laundry detergent, deodorant, household cleaners, vacuum powder...and so on.  I was doing this on top of school work and my internship. Holy crap.

I broke down and bought some Pine Sol mostly because I found that most green cleaners arent green at all! While I loved using baking soda, lets be honest.  It really is hard to rinse the fridge or the floors.  My time I used to make detergent is now spent studying and I have a little more me time.  Oh how fun life is again!  Yep we bought some detergent for the first time in almost a year.

It is nice to be able to relax when I get home.  I get to spend time with husband, play with my fur babies, and  just...you know...be me.  Now when I came onto the whole idea of having a child, I thought about buying my own diapers and the whole nine yards.  You know what?  I think I will just do a diapering service.  Besides it was never about the cost but about reusing.  When it comes time for daycare, I could always check and see if they take All In Ones

No more walking everywhere.  I need to invest in a car mostly because all the good jobs are quite a ways away.  It is going to be 101 outside Friday and its a two mile walk to my interning clinic.  Perfect example right there...oh hell naw.

Aquaponics

Why start an Aquaponic System – In a world where everything is done on the run and more and more people complain about their shortage of time, beginning a new hobby seems as a way of social suicide, as you will have much less time to see your family and friends . This is why many folks are quite reluctant in giving their valuable time away on new activities, particularly if that new activity is gardening.

Fish For Aquaponics   by Ethan Mill
You need fish to have a properly functioning aquaponics system. The reason why fish are required to complete this aquaponics cycle is within the fish waste. The tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and other plants you are growing require nitrogen, which is produced by the fish waste. All aquaponics systems must have the nitrates filtered from the water or the aquaponics fish will die. The growing containers act as this filter because the plants roots take care of everything there. Plants and fish must be present in this system for The Aquaponic Nitrogen Cycle to take place.

SAD BLOG

This blog features Hachiko...scroll down to read about him.

Well first we are going to start about an update to what happened.

Vicky Sue...the gf of manslut.

Yeah me and thim both agree that manslut is totally using Vicky Jo.

It sucks cause Vicky Jo is really cool but dunno how to tell her...about Mary Sue. If you arent sure what I mean consult Takas blog.

EFF YOU MANSLUT. I DIDNT MIND YOU TILL NOW! NO WONDER NOBODY LIKES YOU.

anyway now for a story that is just tragic...and not about mansluts.
Its about a dog.

His name was Hachik? and he was an akita that lived in Tokyo.

Yes he has his own statue in Japan.

copied from Wiki...yeah its pretty accurate

In 1924, Hachik? was brought to Tokyo by his owner Hidesabur? Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo. During his owners life Hachik? saw him off from the front door and greeted him at the end of the day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return on the usual train one evening. The professor had suffered a stroke at the university that day. He died and never returned to the train station where his friend was waiting. Hachik? was given away after his masters death, but he routinely escaped, showing up again and again at his old home. Eventually, Hachik? apparently realised that Professor Ueno no longer lived at the house. So he went to look for his master at the train station where he had accompanied him so many times before. Each day, Hachik? waited for Professor Ueno to return. And each day he did not see his friend among the commuters at the station. The permanent fixture at the train station that was Hachik? attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachik? and Professor Ueno together each day. They brought Hachik? treats and food to nourish him during his wait. This continued for 10 years, with Hachik? appearing only in the evening time, precisely when the train was due at the station.

Hachik? died on March 8, 1935. He was found on a street in Shibuya. His heart was infected with filarial worms and 3–4 yakitori sticks were found in his stomach. His stuffed and mounted remains are kept at the National Science Museum of Japan in Ueno, Tokyo.

This doesnt mean we should all go out and get Akitas though. They are a very dominant breed and will likely eat you if you arent 100% sure on what you are doing...or youre over confident. So lets just admire their beauty on here.

These dogs are HIGH on the euthanasia list...like up there with pit bulls and rotties. Im not saying never own one just be experienced...but if you do then adopt...

NASA Spaceship And Mission Control Desk

Spaceship in bedroom
You have to watch this video of a homemade NASA spaceship and Mission Control desk, part of which is controlled by an Arduino.

The above video is featured in the June 26 "Making Fun: Kid’s Room Spacecraft" post on the Make magazine website. The Mission Control desk featured in the above video and Make post was highlighted in a February 19 Make post, "Making Fun: Mission Control Desk," and was explained in this video. If you liked the video and are interested in details of how Jeff built some of the parts, make sure to read the two posts linked above.

After watching that spaceship video, I was both inspired and embarrassed. Inspired by the awesome job Jeff Highsmith did of building the Mission Control desk for his sons, then later building a NASA spaceship thats linked to the Mission Control desk.
Control panel in spaceship

As someone interested in learning about microcontrollers (MCUs) and about building things with MCUs, I was very much inspired by the variety of switches, lights, controls and realistic panels on the amazing desk and spaceship that Jeff built for his sons. As an engineer I was also inspired when he said in the video, "I put in an iPhone dock for future expansion. For now it will just play video from NASA, but in the future I plan to have some homemade satellites to monitor." I dont know if he meant homemade satellites that hang from the ceiling of his sons room, or if he is figuring that in a few years, there will be civilian satellites and he plans to have one or several of those civilian satellites be his. Either way Im sure his expanded system will be cool, and his sons will have a great time with
Mission Control desk
the desk, the spaceship, the satellites and other additions Jeff and the boys make to their private space program. Can you imagine how much those two boys are going to know about electronics and building stuff by the time they reach high school!

Now to the embarrassing aspect of the Highsmith Space Program. Im a bit embarrassed I never made anything half as cool as that for my kids. Im also a bit embarrassed that the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group hasnt come up with a really unique and interesting project that four or more people want to put a bunch of knowledge and skill into that will make people who see it say, "Whoa, thats really awesome!"

There are a couple things that I want to do a little differently as a result of watching Jeff Highsmiths videos and reading his Make magazine posts about the Mission Control desk and the spaceship.
Payload bay remote camera monitor

The first thing to do differently with MCU projects is to think big while paying attention to details. Jeff appears to have had a big picture idea of what he wanted for his sons -- starting with a homework desk that can convert into a NASA Mission Control desk, then extending the space theme to his other sons bedroom with a spaceship. But what makes the desk and spaceship fantastic accomplishments is the close attention to the details. The control panels have complex and extremely realistic looking labels, switches, lights and controls. To make the experience authentic for his kids, Jeff incorporated recordings from NASA and simulations of actual astronaut problems. I realize the only way to tackle a large project is to break it down into small steps, but you have to have a good picture of what the large project will look like, and you have to pay attention to the small steps. When you know the big picture, and youre taking care of details, then commitment and perseverance have to kick in.

Mission status light panel
So, for the Humboldt Laser Harp and the Electronic Light Orchestra, the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group should discuss, agree on and document what the big picture is. How much time and effort do people want to put into that project. Next we should get more specific, more detailed on the finer points of what wed like the Humboldt Laser Harp to look like and to do from both a music and a lighting standpoint.

The second thing to do differently on MCU projects is taking more photos and videos at each stage of a project, planning ahead of time the shots to capture for each project. Jeffs videos have excellent documentation of building the desk and spaceship. I became less embarrassed but no less inspired when I read that Jeff is a full-time videographer. That explains thinking things out enough ahead of time that he captured cool construction sequences while he was building the projects. It would be really good if the Humboldt MCU group could find a videographer or two who are interested in MCUs and electronics and would like to participate in the groups activities. They would know how to capture the story of a project, and theyd be able to put together a cohesive and impressive video.
Ardunio used to control instrument panel

I think Ill keep a link to Jeffs spaceship video handy and watch that regularly to keep me inspired and to remind me of how rewarding completion of a big, complex project can be.

An I O Source For Platforms That Don’t Have One

[Todays post is by Nick Appelmans, a member of the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group]

Many times I comment that we have more processing power in our phones than the astronauts who traveled to the moon had at their disposal. Often, I follow this up with some derogatory remark about how little we actually use this capability. One area that stands out is controlling physical devices or “physical computing.” I hope this review will inspire you to tap into the resources that sit idle in your pocket and help you to move away from pixel pushing and into the exciting world of input/output.
IOIO board

This blog has previously featured a story on a Kickstarter that produces a device that turns your Android phone into a robot controller. Back in 2011, this feat was accomplished by Ytai Ben-Tsvi, a Google developer, and coworkers working on their 20% time to bring input/output to an Android device using open source hardware and firmware. The IOIO (pronounced “yoyo”) was born and SparkFun picked it up helping to troubleshoot, design the PCB and deal with production. Subsequently in early 2013, a second version was developed, the IOIO OTG (on the go), and several companies help to produce and distribute it (still using open source and selling for $30). The “on the go” designation is more than just a marketing ploy but refers to the fact that the board can now act as a USB device as well as a USB host (more on this later). To date, there is a robust community of developers with an impressive list of completed projects (as of this publication, 181 pins on Pinterest). In this post, I’d like to cover some of the features and describe the process of developing an Android application. Finally, I’ll share some favorite projects that I discovered.
IOIO connected to Android smartphone

The heart of the IOIO is a PIC24F which has lots of ports to provide I/O pins of various flavors (46 in total) operating at 3.3V logic. About half of these pins can be run in ‘open drain’ configuration allowing 5V logic to be implemented or to be used in a bus. These pins can source or sink maximally 20 mA of current and arent meant to drive motors but only to connect to a driver circuit with power provided by an additional source. Sixteen pins can be used for analog input (0 - 3.3V) with a relatively low sample rate (1KHz). However, the MCU can support 500KHz total for all pins and for the enterprising firmware coder, this could be changed (Ytai expressed an interest to improve sample rate for those wishing to work with audio signals in his blog yet I couldnt find that this has been accomplished). Incidentally, Ytai has done a remarkable job of responding to blog comments and forum questions and this as well as the great design features have contributed to forming the robust community at the ioio-users google group. For more information on the specs of these pins and the board in general, check out the wiki here. So, by connecting these pins to various sensors a whole lot of information can be processed by the Android app.
Self-balancing IOIO robot

How do you develop an Android app to control the IOIO? Well, as I said earlier the OTG aspect of the IOIO OTG means that the board can act as a USB host and the Android phone or tablet as the USB device or the other way around for cases where developers want to control I/O ports with a PC. Those wishing to take advantage of PC control of IOIO should look at the wiki info on that topic here.

Android development requires setting up a Java programming environment as described here and including the appropriate SDK for the device you will program for. This is a weak link for folks just starting to develop in Android as there is no clear hand-holding tutorial going from A to Z and the closest one is found on the SparkFun site here which doesnt detail setting up for the current configuration of the IOIO OTG. This version uses Android Open Accessory in lieu of Android Debug Bridge. See the wiki here to use AOA IOIOLibAccessory instead of the IOIOLib that the SparkFun tutorial recommends. This link also covers setting up your AndroidManifest.xml too. It’s time to move on to writing code for the IOIO once youve got your HelloAndroid app running on your phone or tablet. Uploading the HelloIOIO took me a while to straighten out the various file links, and AOA vs ADB approaches.
IOIO cellular wall printer

What’s been done with the IOIO board that caught my attention? Well, since I mentioned the Android robot blog post, I’d be remiss for not including a link to a simple balancing robot here. Here’s a nice surveillance robot. I’m most excited for art that you can control with the IOIO; here’s a link for an android controlled pixel board. I’m picturing a gigantic mural that android users could connect to and create a communal dynamic art piece. Another project is wearable tech; you could easily use a phone to control the color of your outfit like this color picker. If youve ever wanted to write giant messages on your wall from your phone, this cellular wall printer is a great way to do that using the IOIO. And my personal favorite, the ioio breathalyzer.

That’s it. I hope that you are motivated to check out the great work that Ytai and colleagues have accomplished and that you might even consider incorporating the IOIO into your next project.

Ultra Low Power Microcontroller With A Supercapacitor

This post is a follow-up to this blogs FRAM (ferroelectric random-access memory) post in June, and takes a look at a recently-introduced Texas Instruments (TI) FRAM LaunchPad development platform, as well as how to use FRAM effectively in a particular use case.
TI MSP-EXP430FR5969

First the FRAM development platform. It appears from a post on 43oh.com that the MSP430 ULP (ultra low power) FRAM board, MSP-EXP430FR5969, was soft-launched in February 2014, then rolled out with more fanfare and distributor partners in June 2014, per the Australian post, "element14 offers ultra-low power with Texas Instruments LaunchPad dev kit," and a number of other similar new product posts. The Australian post above says,
"Embedded FRAM, a non-volatile memory known for high endurance and high speed write access, together with ultra low power makes the MSP430 development platform suited for a wide variety of applications ranging from metering, wearable electronics, consumer electronics and the Internet of Things (IoT) to industrial and remote sensors, home automation and energy harvesting. The new development kit includes TIs new EnergyTrace++ technology, the worlds first debug system that enables developers to analyse power consumption down to 5nA resolution in real-time for each peripheral...Key features include MSP430 ULP FRAM technology-based 16-bit MSP430FR5969 MCU; 64KB FRAM/ 2KB SRAM; 16-Bit RISC architecture up to 8-MHz FRAM access/ 16MHz system clock speed; 5x Timer Blocks; Analogue: 16Ch 12-Bit differential ADC, 16Ch Comparator; Digital: AES256, CRC, DMA, HW MPY32; 20 pin LaunchPad standard leveraging the BoosterPack ecosystem. Various components including on-board eZ-FET emulation for programming, debugging and energy measurements have been provided in the evaluation kit for a fast start; on-board buttons and LEDs on the board enable quick integration of a simple user interface in addition to a SuperCap allowing standalone applications without an external power supply."
MSP430FR5969 LaunchPad Power Domain Block Diagram
The part that especially interests me is the SuperCap that enables a minimal level of operation without an external power supply (and without a battery?). Enabling MCUs to operate without external power sources was the topic of an earlier post on this blog, "Microcontrollers: Batteries Not Included. Or Needed." That post discussed getting the MCUs power from small energy harvesting devices. It would be nice if a supercapacitor turns out to be another no-batteries-needed option for MCUs. The boards Users Guide shows the power domain block diagram to the left and says, "The board is designed to support five different power scenarios. The board can be powered by eZ-FET or JTAG debugger, external power, BoosterPack power, or standalone super cap power." A bit of online research is needed, it appears, for me to totally understand just how much the MSP-EXP430FR5969 board can do using just the 100 mF capacitor and no external power. If Google and I cant figure that out, Ill check with Ed Smith to get my answer!

If youre interested in the MSP430FR5969 microcontroller (MCU) that powers the above development platform, consider reading the Electronics Weekly article, "Exploring FRAM microcontroller-based design – Texas Instruments." The graphic at the right from that article shows how flexible the memory configurations are in that MCU. Here are a few more resources to help you learn more about the MCU and its platform:
  1. MSP430FRxx MCU overview page on TIs site.
  2. MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad Evaluation Kit page on TIs site.
  3. Overview of MSP430 Ultra-Low-Power MCUs PDF on TIs site.
  4. MSP-EXP430FR5969 LaunchPad Development Kit Users Guide PDF on TIs site.
  5. 6-part video tutorial on YouTube for the MSP-EXP430FR5969.
If you want to buy the MSP-EXP430FR5969 kit, Id suggest you consider either direct from TI ($24.00) or from Newark ($24.05). Octopart gives a good look at the price spread and availability of the kit, with costs ranging from TIs $24 up to more than $39 from Arrow. The 43oh post above shows one way manufacturers entice hardware developers to buy newly released components. For $5 extra ($29 for the kit instead of $24), when you ordered the MSP-EXP430FR5969 kit from TI when it first came out, you got both the kit and a "LS013B4DN04
SHARP Memory LCD display...1.35?...96×96 pixels wide...booster PCB has touch capability, with touch strips on either side of the LCD" which retailed for $18. I dont know if $5 for that LCD is a better deal than the small LCD Ed Smith had at the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group meeting last week, but the touch strips would have made it an interesting component with which to experiment. Element14 also has a road kit for the board which includes the same LCD.

The other part of this post was going to be on an ideal use case for the MSP430FR5969 MCUs FRAM. However, I wrote more about the TI development kit than I planned on, and Im being mindful of feedback I got that said (at least some of) my posts were too long. So for people interested in reading about that use case right away, heres a link to the article about the FRAM-MCU application I mentioned at the start of this post. Ill discuss that use case in tomorrows post, and maybe have a couple other examples of good applications for an MCU that doesnt pull much amperage and has FRAM. If you read the FRAM-MCU application article, send me your comments and questions regarding that article -- arcatabob (at) gmail {dott}com. Thanks!

why you dont have a girlfriend

KEY - because the picture didnt show up all the way

Im only average looking, but have a fun personality.

Im shy around girls, but great once I get to know them.

I dont hang out with the popular crowd but have fun, close friends.

I cant afford to buy her nice things, but Im willing to put the time and effort.

Im a level 80 Paladin

Ok let me clarify this one a little bit.

Its not because this person has a level 80 WoW character (btw 85 is the new 80) but because he has a level 80 Paladin. You see Paladins are ridiculous characters that have pretty good strength, can heal, resurrect, buff the crap out of themselves, and are basically effing cheating gay blurbs that are best used for starters. Yes I know I have a blood Elf Paladin...she is ridiculous.

So the reason these people dont have a girlfriend isnt because they play WoW enough to get to level 80 but because they want to get to a goal without working as hard as everyone else (AKA Bill Gates-ish). Oh and the fact he is calling himself a level 80 Paladin...is it the only character? What a loser. He is not a level 80 but his character is. Hopefully he doesnt run around like a douche with his level 80 Paladin and has created another character =]

1. Food for the fish. how do I breed grubs, worms, blood worms, etc without soil?

2. How do I power my pump without electricity? Im thinking solar or wind.

3. Due to evaporation and plants using the water how do I replace it? I was thinking a few rain barrels, but if it doesnt rain for a while......? Guess where I suggested he comes...
