Aquaponic Gardening Workshops

Sylvia Bernstein teaching aquaponics
Over the past two years I’ve taken several aquaponics workshops and classes, and taught several myself.  One thing that I’ve learned is that, while an aquaponics system is fairly easy to operate once it is up and running, a beginner has a lot to learn at the outset in order to be successful.  Here is what I’ve discovered that a beginner can comforatably

Aquaponics vs. Hydroponic nutrients

I’ve gardened in dirt for many, many years in a variety of climates (Illinios, Ohio, Colorado, California) so when I discovered hydroponics 7 years ago I thought it was amazing.  Imagine, no dirt, no weeds, fast growth, never needing to worry about when to water and when to fertilize.  Best part was because the grow beds are portable I could “garden” where ever I wanted.  But there was always that nagging issue of the nutrients.  Most nutrients in hydroponics are based on mineral salts, which could be ecologically harvested and purified, but I’m afraid the vast majority just aren’t.  It always felt a little like I was feeding my plants with a chemical

Aquaponic Fish: To Eat or Not To Eat
Yesterday I was asked why someone would grow aquaponically.  I went through the usual reasons that we probably all use to justify the time and money we spend on our obsession – organic produce that is sustainably grown, the ability to garden anywhere, regardless of soil quality, without mess or weeds, etc., etc, etc.  I found myself wrapping it all up, however, with the heartfelt exclamation “but the real reason is that...

Aquaponics: Certified Organic Without Soil?

Believe it or not, you cannot be certified USDA organic if you grow crops in a soilless environment in the U.S.

Dirt = Organic…WHY???

Bevan Suits of Access to Aquaponics has launched a righteous war of soil semantics with the National Organic Standards Board.  On December 17 he sent a letter to Valerie Francis, Executive Director, and Jeff Moyer, Chairman, which I’m excerpting below. Therell be more from Sylvia over the next few issues

DIY urban bathtub aquaponics system
Aquaponics just might be the ultimate closed-loop food production system. A healthy aquaponics system can provide its lucky owner with fresh fish and fresh organic vegetables year round, for very little ongoing cost. Getting an aquaponics system set up, however, can be costly. There’s lots of off-the-shelf systems to choose from nowadays, but they cost a bundle.                                              ...oooOooo...

First Past The Post
I’m always on the look-out for early varieties and was recently introduced to realseeds.co.uk by one of the Tomato Club Members.
The Race Is On!
It seems that they have a very early cherry/bush variety called Latah which was developed in Idaho, USA for short seasons. That’s a bit like the summer in the UK!
I’ve ordered some of these seeds and intend to grow this variety alongside Red Alert and one or two other early fruiting varieties to see which is the earliest. I’ll keep you up to date with the results.

Try Sprouts
If you want to grow nutritious and tasty fresh vegetables during the cold months, sprouts are the answer to your prayers. In just a few days, a handful of seeds will turn into several servings of crunchy sprouts. It doesn’t get more fresh and local than that!
By Tabitha Alterman and Barbara Pleasant
Sprouts can be grown easily in hemp or flax bags. And they come in a wider variety than you may realize. Try multi-colored purple radish sprouts or crisp sprouted peas.

Best Vegetables to Grow in the Shade
Even in shaded conditions, you can bask in great garden harvests if you choose the right crops and make a few easy adjustments.
By Colleen Vanderlinden
For successful growing in the shade, remove low-hanging branches from nearby trees, use raised beds and liners to discourage tree roots from wicking water away from crops, and use reflective mulches to give plants more light.

Hi To All My Special Friends

Lots to do again, the note book is bulging with sites, blogs and a couple of emails. So again I need to get focused, click my heels and see if I can get some help from some good fairy at the bottom of the garden. Meanwhile Ill just flounder along on my own......

Most useful lighting for highschool greenhouse

The new greenhouse will soon be completed (15 x 57) not including a 15x57 "prep room" in the second floor of my high school. We are planning on a Murray-esq flood drain system with a raisable double bunkbed system. I thought the T5 HO lights would be best for the widest variet of plants and best for not burning students. Im interested in the communities thoughts on the subject.

But the growing systems are different, as aquaponic specialist and dedicated advocate Jim Tinker explained to me during a recent visit to his establishment on Masonboro Loop Road in Wilmington.
For most of his working life, Tinker was a sign maker based in Sanford.

Where Oh Where have all the Fridays gone

Before I retired I used to look forward all week for Friday. This was the big goal in my life and Friday was always the longest day of the week. Now all that has gone. Now every day could be almost the same as every other day. So we need to be careful. Making sure that there is enough variety in our week so we can always differentiate between them. You know, when you think about it, Possibly its things like lost Fridays that could be a contributing factor in elderly illnesses and maybe depression. Chitin ☜ the all natural pesticide disease correction in plants ●●●●☺

We have been very interested in chitin as of recently, weve always used worm castings in our grows, even hydroponics,  but never knew of its amazing qualities in bug prevention and disease correction, we just thought it was our special touch, lol, how naive the human brain can be.
But just recently thanks to john from growing your greens.com
( http://www.youtube.com/user/growingyourgreens )
gave a wonderful talk about the benefits of chitin and where you can get it. This got me to researching and found its one of the most abundant sources of natural polymers, has healing benefits, treats disease on trees, and repels insects just to name a few. I found an article online with an extensive list of ideas on how to use it, create it, and where to pick some up. HERE YA GO

Friday and We are all a Bit Sick of this Weather

So I guess most of us are wondering what is the next weather installment. Well not me, Ive had all the weather I need. So Ill just sit here and get on with work:

It occurred to me a couple of days ago that I had never written anything reviewing my Friendly Aquaponics Commercial Training experience.  It was a profound four days in my life and yet I have never chronicled it.  I think I finally will now.

We arrived in Kona late Saturday night after grounded planes and nearly missed flights.  We were tired but excited as we drove from the airport up to Waimaia where we were staying.  Tomorrow we would go to the farm tour and then the class would start on Monday.  We slept well, but cold in the little Hawaiin hotel room with no heat.  It was dipping into the 40s there at night and we Florida girls were freezing!  The next morning we headed out for breakfast and to go to the farm tour.

Linking all that is Aquaponics and that which is Not

This may seem to be a strange title, but hopefully you will see the connections. Every AP System has at its core a fish tank, some form of growing area, plants, fish or other aquatic creatures and a flow system that provides the connection between all of them. The other additive is some form of propulsion (usually in the form of an electric pump) so that water and the products of the system (nutrients etc.) can be distributed throughout the system. Then we can add the bacteria that makes itself available to convert by-products of the system so that life is breathed into it.

Oh yes, I had better include the other bacteria. The bad bacteria that can settle in any corners and cause what can be, major problems within your system. We need to be aware that just as we have aerobic bacteria, we also have anaerobic bacteria in our AP system. However just as you and I have both good and bad bacteria in our bodies, its the proportion of bad bacteria that is allowed to develop that can cause problems.

Fortunately, provided we are aware of good housekeeping procedures in and around our AP system we are pretty certain of keeping it in a safe condition.

There are other thing that can be added to the list that can be byproducts or by-producers in your AP system for example Soldier Fly Larvae, Worms, Duck Weed, Lupin and probably many other available items and products that will gradually be recognized as beneficial to a system.

My hope is that each one of us can and will benefit by what is and will be available through the internet and of course through this Blog.

So to any new visitors, welcome pull up a log and sit a while.....

So now, back to my notes....
First up is a site that goes something like this...
Aquaponics is the marriage of organic hydroponics and aquaculture. Fish waste becomes

Heres a twist, this is a site introducing another site. So seeing as how Ive already provided a link to that other site, I thought I might as well do the same for this one...
The worldwide demand for seafood is huge and ascending. The global seafood industry is...

Strawberry spinach ☼☼☀☀☀☼☼

Strawberry Spinach
When We first planted the strawberry spinach seeds aka ( chenopodium capitatum ) last year it was a little to late, We never got to see it flower/fruit, and to be honest I didnt even realize it would come back ( Im a little to use to my exotics right now ). But as soon as spring rolled around I recognized it right away. Now that june has arrived these beauties are shining in all there glory. When I first tasted the leaves I was stunned, there was something to it I just couldnt figure out, Ive heard people say its a nutty flavour, but that didnt seem right, and Ive heard others say spinach, but that isnt it either, and then all of a sudden it hit me, WHAAM!!..

!??! GRAPE !??!

To me its like a very light grape minus the sugar, and unlike lettuce there is no bitterness thankfully, even in flowering. Now heres the odd part, when I tasted the berry I expected something strawberry like, or heck.. just some type of berry at least,
this was not the case.
I guess Ill be the one to say it, {{DrumRoll}} ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
THEY TASTE LIKE SPINACH!!!!

Its....Hmmmm.... not as bad as it sounds.
Its only a light spinach taste, but I really wasnt expecting that. While it has little in berry flavour, they go perfect in salads or yogurts, fruit parties, bragging rights, experiments
( ice cream, strawberry and rhubarb desert, vinegars, pickles or jarred vegg  ).
But the fact that these seeds/plants survived our winter and are quick to flower, providing edible leaves and fruit most of the year,
puts this plant on top of the edible landscapers list for me.
And just between me and you.... ( looks cautiously from side to side
I think the leaves taste better then lettuce.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT

The figures speak for themselves.

Compare them with any other form of vegetable gardening technique.

Heres part of a writeup from the first site Id like you to visit.....
Enter aquaponics, a system of food gardening that has a small but growing fan base, not least because its advantages seem almost too good to be true. An aquaponics installation requires no soil, scant water (2 to 10 percent of what is used in the average vegetable garden), a modest financial outlay and minimal maintenance. Theres no dealing with pesticides, and the system is sustainable and easy to set up. For gardeners conscious of the need to slash their water use during Californias drought, or those with little or no land, this method has a lot to offer.

One more thing.....
Youve heard about auto-siphons..... Well do you want one almost for free....
Im sure you can work out the details from the picture below.

CABBAGE BRAIN!!!

So today...little crappy. Lack of job...wait listed....bleh

so I did the emac egg on my Mac. Not sure what exactly it does but....here is what the computer had to say.

Yow! Legally-imposed CULTURE-reduction is CABBAGE-BRAINED!

Is it because of any hobbies you have that you say legally imposed
culture reduction is cabbage brained?

I have no friggin idea what this means XD

and after one of the lines...out of like...1000 it said

Perhaps this has something to do with your inhibitions?

smart ass.

so if you have a mac...here is what you do

1. Open A Terminal
2. type "emacs"; hit return (or enter)
3. Press ESC + X at the same time
4. You should see "M-x" appear
5. Type "psychoanalyze-pinhead" after the "M-x"
6. To stop press Ctrl-G

nice to know what this computer is thinking.

EDIT

I did it again and this is what I got

Yow! Legally-imposed CULTURE-reduction is CABBAGE-BRAINED!

Do you really think legally imposed culture reduction is cabbage
brained?

Yow! Legally-imposed CULTURE-reduction is CABBAGE-BRAINED!

Is it because of hangups you have that you say legally imposed culture
reduction is cabbage brained?

Yow! Legally-imposed CULTURE-reduction is CABBAGE-BRAINED!

How do you reconcile your inhibitions?

Yow! Legally-imposed CULTURE-reduction is CABBAGE-BRAINED!

Food out of water
Mainstream aquaponics faces economic and environmental challenges
By Zak Weinberg

Aquaponics systems depend on fish and plants co-existing.
Mickey Mouse has never been known for his green thumb, but a ride dedicated to aquaponics at Disney’s Epcot Center (surely a death-defying thrill) highlights the public curiosity for this growing trend. While an increasing number of people take an interest in aquaponics as a way to grow crops and fish — and Longmont is seeing the opening of a 7,400-square-foot aquaponics store — industry professionals continue to wrestle with...MORE

Small Home Aquaponics Setup
I wanted to share with others who may be interested in aquaponics our first small home set-up that my husband designed. We just turned it on yesterday. There are a few small bugs to work out but it works like a charm. Of course we havent added any plants yet but I hope if there is anyone else out there doing this they jump in and offer any information and experiences they have found worthy to share. If you have ever had a successful fish aquarium you can do this...MORE

Aquaponics Is Growing Farms in the Most Unlikely Places

By Ben Richmond
The world is growing and growing ever more hungry, and there isn’t a single, perfect way to get more food. The changing climate and a projected water crisis cloud the future of agriculture, but the sting of food shortages is already with us, catalyzing riots and political unrest in places like Turkey, Syria and Egypt.

But countries from Bangladesh to Yemen, and cities from Berlin to Tucson, are employing an ancient farming technique

Arduino Aquaponics: Real-Time-Clock Part
A fundamental necessity of any controls system is the ability to track time.  As far as we are aware, the Arduino has three methods it can employ:

1.  Serial.  Repeatedly get the time over the Serial connection.
2.  External Hardware.  Real-time clocks, like the ChronoDot from Macetech, establish a base time when the Arduino sketch is compiled.  When you request the current time in the sketch you actually receive a time based on the time that has elapsed since compilation.
3.  Ethernet.  Access time using the internet NTP service.

This tutorial set focuses on option 2.  In Part I we explain the basics of getting the ChronoDot set up and displaying the current time over serial.  You can find more projects using the ChronoDot in our upcoming book, Automating Aquaponics with Arduino.

Greenhouse Aquaponics
What is controlled environment agriculture?

Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is the use of technology to manipulate the growing environment to provide the conditions most desired by the plants and animals. Light, temperature, humidity, and nutrients levels are managed by the grower for optimum production. CEA is an intensive method of farming that maximizes its resources

Hydroponics and aquaponics make dirt-free produce possible
Ever heard of the indoor farm that didnt need any soil? Well, take a look around, because one might be springing up in your neighborhood sometime soon.

Theres a new crop of growers in Connecticut who are turning traditional farming on its head by taking plants inside and leaving the dirt at the door. Some are calling it the future of growing.
