Humboldt Microcontrollers Group July 24 2014 Meeting Notes

One of the reasons for this blog and for the formation of the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group is the redwood curtain, which is both an actual and perceived barrier between Humboldt County and the rest of the world. In many ways, that curtain is a much appreciated and highly beneficial barrier, preserving natural beauty, creating a slower pace of life, and leading to a better balance between work and non-work activities. But in other ways, that barrier brings economic challenges and limits both the job opportunities for people and growth opportunities for

companies. One way to reduce the redwood curtain barrier for people and companies in this region who work with microcontrollers (MCUs) is to connect, strengthen, and promote the Humboldt microcontroller community. This blog and the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group are both working to connect, strengthen and promote that community.

So, the main topic of the July 24 meeting of the MCU group was the #8 Jeremy Blum Arduino video tutorial (see also my previous post about that tutorial). The focus of the #8 tutorial is SPI (Serial Peripheral Interface), and Jeremy uses an AD5204 digital potentiometer to demonstrate the use of SPI. Ed Smith used a different digital potentiometer than the hard-to-find AD5204 when he did the #8 tutorial exercise, so the sketch Jeremy wrote in the tutorial doesnt work correctly because of the differences in the two potentiometers. Well have to figure out an appropriate alternative potentiometer and accompanying code for other Humboldt people who want to do the #8 tutorial exercise. One more item to add to the list of things-to-do regarding developing a set of effective learning tools for people in this region interested in MCUs.

No one at the meeting had actually worked through the exercise in tonights video. Since none of the people at the meeting tonight had done the exercise, we didnt spend too much time talking about either the technology of a digipot or about interesting or unique aspects of SPI. Maybe at a future meeting? My plan is to talk with Ed, Nick and anyone else interested to agree on a good alternative digital potentiometer and to modify or rewrite the Arduino sketch to work with the digipot we choose.

In addition to the #8 tutorial, the following topics were discussed at the meeting:
  • Somewhat related to the #8 tutorial, Bob asked about using a digital potentiometer (or other components / circuitry) to match color and intensity in a set of three LEDs that are simultaneously given the same input signal but seem to generate different colors. The LEDs are Cree PLCC4 (plastic leaded chip carrier) 3-in-1 SMD LEDs. Based on the little bit we could figure out during tonights meeting about how the LEDs are powered and controlled, Nick suggested the first step should be to put an oscilloscope on the lines going to each 3-in-1 LED to confirm theyre all seeing the same signal. Nick also said its likely the LEDs are adjusted by PWM (pulse width modulation) rather than by varying the power to them, so the digipot would probably not be a possible way to adjust the colors. If all three are seeing the same signal, it would appear unit variability in the LED color output may be the issue. The spec for the LEDs says "Tolerance of measurement of dominant wavelength is ±1 nm" so that spec appears pretty tight. I need to research the issue of bin codes and figure out how to determine if the 3-in-1 LEDs we purchased for this order have green and blue LEDs all from the same bin code. According to the datasheet, the red LEDs only have one bin code (which identifies the wavelength range for that LED), but the blue and green LEDs for this particular component each have seven bin codes. So if some blues were at the bottom of the wavelength range and others were at the top, that might result in a noticeable color difference even with the same applied PWM signal. Of course, keep in mind that my knowledge about PWM signals applied to 3-in-1 LEDs, or other types of RGB LEDs, or even single color LEDs is extremely limited. Researching this will definitely be a learning exercise.
  • HLH frame
  • An update about the Humboldt Laser Harp (HLH) project was given to the group by Nick and Ed. Nick has the frame of the HLH just about completed. In the upper picture on the right you can see the laser harp frame. If you look near the top of the lower picture on the right, a bit of a laser beam is visible -- first sighting of the infamous HLH laser beams. One outcome of tonights meeting is that Gordon will be working with Nick to design and build a base for the harp. Gordon also had an interesting suggestion for laser beam presence enhancement in brightly lighted areas. He suggested shooting the laser through a diffusing or side-emitting light pipe for part of the distance from the laser to the light sensor.
  • From a HLH programming standpoint, Ed has been crafting the code that will convince the Humboldt heavenly harp to generate many marvelous melodies. In version 1.0 of the HLH, the goal is to have a demonstration device that produces simple tunes and has a reasonable degree of casual interactivity with curious members of the general public. Future versions are envisioned that incorporate music-correlated lighting effects and more musical instrument capabilities, e.g. lots of simultaneous notes, note strength and fade effects, simulation of different musical instruments, allowing notes from several octaves, different type of controls for the musicians playing the HLH, etc. As with many other maker

    topics, there are lots of people who have specialized in the field of DIY electronic music, and much of what well be doing in the early days of the Humboldt Electronic Light Orchestra will be research on whats already been done, connecting with people in the DIY electronic music field who are willing to share their knowledge or who are interested in what were doing, and starting to develop new (as far as we can tell) electronic music ideas of our own.
  • The plan is for Nick and Ed to get together this weekend, connect the hardware with the software, flip the switch, and see what happens on the HLH. Stay tuned for updates and videos...
  • We discussed the upcoming August 2 maker fair in Eureka, which has been organized by Origin Design Lab. Nick and Gordon will figure out if Gordon has any maker projects that would be good to have at the Humboldt Makers table. Shawn Dean from InPrinting will be at the table doing 3D printing demonstrations. It would be great if other Humboldt Makers can spend an hour or a couple hours at the maker fair, which sounds like it will primarily be a craft fair aimed at being a selling opportunity for local craftspeople. Even if you cant be at the Humboldt Makers table, if you have an item that will be interesting to the general public, please contact Nick Appelmans or me (my email is arcatabob (at) gmail {dott} com).
  • Justin suggested the Humboldt Makers might consider doing a minor repair on the 3D printer that InPrinting nearly finished building some months ago, then figure out what else needs to be done to get the unit printing. We can discuss that at the next meeting as either an activity to spend a couple Thursday meetings on, or a project that one or several people would work on as time becomes available.

Hello Guys and Galls

Just a little addition to last issues focus and of course for first time people who missed it. (Its under this one).
The range of FREE food for omnivorous fish includes the Duckweed, Black Soldier Fly Lavae, Letuce, Water Cabbage, Worms (if youre rich)* plus the crusty water dwellers. There are plenty of videos on Youtube.com about collecting and preparing suitable mixes. Oh yes algae:

Most of the plants that live on the intertidal rocky shore, or under the water along our seashores, are algae. Most people call these algae plants seaweed, or kelp.
Because of their location (Remember they make up a major portion of the worlds natural salt water aquaponic systems)they dont need roots. As I just said Major portion the rest basically are sea grasses which do have roots. 

The algea feed through their leaf-like fronds taking neutrient from the surounding water. They have "Holdfasts" which is a near to roots as they come.

Again, Algea reproduce differently to flowering plants. They are more like ferns, mosses, lichens and liverworts because they give off spore. 

Anyhow there is a wealth of information on the net and it is really interesting stuff. So if you have some time up your sleeve, why not Google algea and have ten minutes of learning.

If you are thinking of setting up your own aquaponic system but are still not very aware of what this presupposes, then here are some things which will help you understand better its requirements. The first thing you will need to know about this system is that it combines the principles of aquaculture with those of hydroponic gardening, thus resulting a new and highly effective way of growing plants and fish at the same time. Aquaponics Quarantine system:
Finally, I moved the waterfall tank back by the two North Grow beds on my big system and turned that into my new Aquaponics Quarantine system. Tank over 200 gallons and about 200 gallons worth of grow bed.
That should be enough to make a decent quarantine system I would hope.
Trick with a small aquaponics system though is that there needs to be enough flow and aeration to keep the dissolved oxygen up for the fish as well. The choice of pump for such an aquaponics system is very important. I found that with too many fish, tilapia would not eat well if I didn’t have supplemental aeration in that tank....

Green-Acres, Nelson and Pade, partners - Kansas City Aquaponics Project
This week John and I travelled to Kansas City to meet with Ms. Carol Coe and the Green Acres Community Garden group. We began talking with Ms. Coe over a year ago about expanding their community garden program into aquaponics and education. A group from Green Acres toured our greenhouse in November of 2009 and, now after a great deal of planning, working and collaborating, they are funded and ready to start the project.
Green Acres has partnered with the City, the school district and other organizations to put this plan into action. The project will utilize abandoned (but very nice) greenhouses at East High School to launch an aquaponics program...

Some might ask me how I manage to use an indexing valve on my big system CHIFT PIST set up when my pump runs constantly. Well this might not be the best layout for using an indexing valve but I’m managed to make it work.

I designed a low pressure aquaponics automated valve that can still work with only about 18 inches of water column. The indexing valve in question has a gravity modified stem and with a huge flow of water with that 18 inches of water column it has been working well for about a year and a half.

I think I have finally found a suitable pump for our new aquaponics system. Not that the MD5 pump won’t do the job, but I haven’t found one for sale in Europe. The pump I found earlier is an internal one and the head of the Fish Department (my girlfriend ;-) ) would prefer if the pump was placed outside the fish tank to get a cleaner look, and I agree so I was off to find an external pump. People around here working with aquariums refer to such a device as a “bucket pump” so I searched

Skys Not The Limit For Arduinos In Space

Arduinos In Space could be the tagline for the two microcontroller (MCU) products that are the topic of tonights post -- Ardulab and ArduSat.

First off, Ardulab. Although some may find it a skoosh misleading, SpaceRefs July 25 article about an Arduino in space is titled, "Infinity Aerospaces Ardulab Makes Building & Launching Space-Certifiable Hardware As Easy As Baking Cookies." I baked cookies tonight. Oatmeal-raisin cookies. They tasted good. Baking them was more difficult than walking across the street and buying cookies from the North Coast Co-op. But it was much less challenging than building and launching space-certified hardware. On the other hand, baking cookies was also definitely much less rewarding and interesting than launching space hardware.

Ardulab projects are intended to democratize the hardware needed to perform experiments on the International Space Station. According to the SpaceRef article,
"Today Infinity Aerospace announced the complete open-sourcing of Ardulab, the Arduino powered platform for building and launching simple experiments to the International Space Station. Previously costing space researchers, students, and experimenters between $2,000 - $3,500 per kit, anyone can now build and launch an off-the-shelf space-certifiable experiment, with the only costs being building their equipment and launching it. When it was originally conceived back in 2012, the fundamental idea behind Ardulab was to give as many people as possible the tools and information they need to be successful in space. Making Ardulab a completely open-source platform allows for all of the intellectual property to be used to its full extent. The Ardulab is a plug-n-play electronics platform with all of the necessary features and interfaces for use on the International Space Station."

It seems like Humboldt creative minds could come up with a few unique and worthwhile space station experiments. Maybe something involving redwoods in space. After all, there are already redwoods growing on the Humboldt State University (HSU) campus grown from seeds that orbited the moon in 1971. Using the Ardulab platform, the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group could help build the hardware for the experiments that get accepted by NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Or the MCU group could help organize a design competition for an Ardulab project. That might be a fun and effective way to get Humboldt students interested in learning how to design and build Arduino-powered projects and might also get them interested in space. It would just be a extra bonus if one of the Humboldt Ardulab competition projects was accepted by NASA to be sent up to the space station. Maybe the end result would be that wed have another batch of aerospace redwoods growing on the HSU campus.

The second MCU in space item for tonights post is the ArduSat. The backstory for ArduSat, designed and built by the space startup NanoSatisfi, is an intriguing one if youre interested in how a microcontroller project went from a concept to company that just received $25 million in funding. The backstory can be told as a couple guys that designing a cool, innovative and useful piece of technology in a California garage -- the Singularity Hub article "Space Exploration On The Cheap: Kickstarter Sensation NanoSatisfi Launches in 2013" says:
"NanoSatisfi is based out of a collective workspace provided by tech incubator, Lemnos Labs, and situated near the ballpark in downtown San Francisco. Upon arrival, one is greeted by a nondescript front door sporting a few haphazardly labeled buzzers...NanoSatisfi doesn’t have a buzzer—Lemnos Labs is in the garage."

Or the backstory can be looked at from a different perspective that seems a bit less grassroots bootstrapping, with the same Singularity Hub article explaining that:
"Singularity Hub asked Peter Platzer, co-founder of NanoSatisfi, to elaborate...Platzer began his career as a high-energy physicist at CERN [Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire; same place the Internet was invented]...After CERN, Platzer went to Harvard to get his MBA and wound up running a $500 million quant fund on Wall Street."
The Wikipedia entry for ArduSat has a timeline for the project, but the big picture is that NanoSatisfi ran a Kickstarter campaign for the ArduSat and got over $100,000, about three times what their original funding goal was. They followed that up by raising over a million dollars more. Apparently that wasnt enough money to successfully launch that ArduSat, because they just announced today, July 29, that they have raised $25 million and changed their name from NanoSatisfi to Spire, Inc.

The Wikipedia entry described ArduSat this way:
"ArduSat is an open source, Arduino based Nanosatellite, based on the CubeSat standard. It contains a set of Arduino boards and sensors. The general public will be allowed to use these Arduinos and sensors for their own creative purposes while they are in space...ArduSat is the first open source satellite which will provide such open access to the general public to space."
If there are a few civilian space enthusiasts in Humboldt, we could pull together a complex, interesting, challenging and fun project or competition involving both Ardulab and ArduSat, two MCU-controlled projects that Humboldt people could work on. Thats one project that would truly be out of this world!

A Yarn About Microcontrollers And Textile Projects

Yesterday’s post on this blog was about the Tetris Shirt, a textile computing project. Today’s post will follow up on that topic with a couple related ideas and articles.
Conductive yarn

First up is the primary focus of the post -- ‘smart yarn. A few days ago I read a Wired article titled "This Smart Yarn Makes Gadget Interactions Magical." The article discusses a relatively unique approach to textile computing projects. This novel type of yarn combines conductive steel fiber and non-conductive yarn fiber.
"A new project from Royal College of Art student Yen Chen Chang explores what happens when you replace glass, metal and plastic with textile control mechanisms. The result? A totally new way to interact with our everyday devices. Using conductive yarn made from 80 percent polyester and 20 percent stainless steel...Chang knit and crocheted a series of
objects that control devices by pulling, squeezing and stroking. When manipulated, the overlap of the metal fiber causes the textile to change conductivity which is then measured by an Arduino and communicated to the gadgets...Chang developed the
Squeezy Juicer, a juicer that only works when you squeeze an oversized knit ball between two people. The faster you squish the ball, the quicker you’ll have your orange juice...“When you integrate different sensing technology into today’s electronics, you can make something look totally different,” he says
."
Dezeens article explains how Changs conductive yarn came to be.
"Knit Sensors was Yen Chen Changs graduation project from the Design Products course at Londons RCA, and involved experimenting with conductive textiles to provide a more tangible alternative to touch screens and other typical interfaces...The designer began his project by exploring the possibility of knitting standard electrical cables into self-supporting structures, which he realised generated a small amount of resistance because of the complexity of their intertwined surfaces. Recognising that manipulating the surfaces affected the amount of resistance, Chang began to explore the possibility of weaving with conductive yarns connected to sensors that translate actions like stretching and pulling into voltage changes."
Yarn glove electronics
Two other websites to look at if this yarn is of interest to you are the alphafit and Eeonyx sites. The alphafit technology involves pressure sensitive textiles. The company states:
"For the first time it is now possible...to measure surface pressure on three-dimensional variable surfaces. The filament itself measures the pressure. We have developed a textile system that works without the need of inserting any industrial sensors. This measurement system can be integrated into any textile."
Eeonyx makes an electronics-friendly yarn that is says consists of,
"...a conductive polymer coated yarn with precisely tunable electrical resistance and excellent uniformity of linear resistance. EeonYarn™ is durable, able to stand up to real world conditions of abrasion and repeated washings. Applications for EeonYarn™ include radar absorbing fabrics and composites, resistive fabric heaters, and woven pressure sensors."
Adafruit tilt sensor
More readily available, or maybe lower cost, textile microcontroller (MCU) project supplies and techniques are described in Adafruits datasheet titled "Handcrafting Textile Sensors From Scratch." This PDF document shows a whole slew of supplies and tools for textile sensor projects. It shows the basics of making textile sensors such as a pressure sensor matrix and a tilt sensor. A worthwhile read for someone interested in textile computing projects. Another great background guide for this topic is Katies "Soft Electronics Tutorial."

Two other random textile computing items Ill throw in here at the end are the Lilypad Arduino, an alternative to the Adafruit FLORA mentioned in yesterdays blog post, and ChipChicks article titled "Dragon Inspired Outfit Hits the Fashionware Runway Show" which has some pretty interesting projects. The Lilypad has been used in many projects -- just Google   Lilypad project   and youll find more wearable computing projects than you have time to read about. The ChipChick article, although not solely about MCU fashion items, does talk about relevant products, saying:
"CE Week may be over but the fashion will always live on. A one stop shop for NY’s geek-erati, but this year they got treated to a bit of high fashion as well. The Weekend is near and I Need the Rest

This has been a huge week that everyone here in South East Queensland will be glad to put to bed as soon as we can. There is so much heartache and in some areas the smell is sickening. But I need to not dwell on this and deal with what is at hand.

On Jan. 16, the Monterey Bay chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers will host a scion exchange, where cuttings from fruit trees -- called scions -- will be available to buy and graft onto root stocks. There also will be a short grafting workshop, and custom trees can be created on the spot.
Fusing a scion to a root stock produces a clone of the scions donor tree, with the same tasty fruit -- like, for example, the funny-looking, scrumptious Allens Everlasting apple, which is not available at the neighborhood Safeway...

Why is there very little take up of Aquaponics in the commercial arena around the world? Is it lack of knowledge, too new and unknown or just too hard to make it work profitably?

Its not to do with making it work properly; it has been put to bed by now that this technology works and works well. My work at University and in New Zealand shows categorically that you can match, and even sometimes better, hydroponic plant growth rates and the harvest quality of the plants. meet Baili Buck and Bradley


well not so much Bradley and Buck. But here is their interesting story.

So...first...lets meet Jesse. Jesse is the son of Nova and Dustin. For whatever reason, Jesse inherited the normal Sims2 eyes and not the nice realistic ones. Like it passed through five generations and was only showing up with Nova and Dustins offspring. Why did I keep them paired? Well there is a gene Im breeding out. Basically the noses on some males looks odd and slightly detached from their face. Only shows up on the Y chromosome I guess. Anyway...Jesse got normal green Sims eyes but didnt inherit the nose gene.

sooo...I kept him.

However I wanted the realistic eyes back with hopefully more males.

Now meet Ashlynne (I think). Ashlynne is Novas mom. Since I can only have cousins mate within the game, I summoned the tombstone of life and death.

Apparently when I went to take more pics...there were triplets. I think they might also be Ashlynnes but Im not sure with who XD.

HSUS PETA and SHARK I need help understanding

- start rant -

SPCA, Shelters...everyone...struggles to make money to feed animals and care for them. Why is it organizations that dont even have animals in possession are making millions?

is there a problem? Maybe I could make millions on people being retarded.

so four major things I HAVE to do in life

1) Take down PETA
2) Take down SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness...mainly a rodeo focus)
3) Take down HSUS...or at least change them
4) Take down Microsoft

so whats wrong with PETA? Everything...
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wishes to destroy every pet animal. They have ben cited for throwing dead bodies onto highways and even spent millions on a freezer. Worst story I have been able to read (not the worst but those make me sick) is about a dog. She had a litter, was very skinny, and was diagnosed with cancer. PETA fought to keep her out of the shelter and to let her roam the streets. Is the freedom worth it? Doesnt sound very ethical to me.

Ok so most people think rodeos look bad. SHARK is a ridiculous organization based and targeted to city people and people that have no idea what rodeos are about. Rodeos are sports where a cowboy/girl demonstrates their ability to do things that were necessary back in the day. Roping a calf and tying it up is a lot safer than leaving it to survive on its own in the wilderness...or even leave males intact where they can go and break a cows back. So whats with bull/bronco riding? With bulls...how else did you expect to keep up with a loose bull? Chase it in a Mercedes? Same with horses (although that was normally used for breaking...which isnt used today).

HSUS...not the worse thing...but very racist like PETA. They are also against keeping pit bulls alive as well as other animals. However they focus mainly on encouraging proper care (when they arent trying to commit genocide). I just think they dont need the millions they make when they arent even helping shelters....except to commit genocide.

Microsoft was only included in this cause I hate it SO much that I feel I always need to include it in hate rants.

How to get through an intersection with no lights blinking red light

I was waiting for my bus today when PG&E shut off the power to the intersection. The turn lights completely shut off and the normal lights were blinking...typically what happens when street lamps are reset.

First few minutes, no fails. Good job. The first fail started when someone went into the turn lane and stayed there...for a very...long...time....as if she couldnt see that the stop light next to it was blinking!!!

So she finally goes. I notice that there is a guy at the cross walk waiting to cross...as if he couldnt see the giant blinking red lights. He continued to push the button to cross the street.

Then a lady came and tried to do the same thing but finally crossed. He jogged across along with her.

AND THEN

a car jumped in front of another car (this actually happened about five times from the fifteen minutes I was at the stop) as if the other car was supposed to wait when they had the right away.

OK so heres my guide to surviving outed street lamps and blinking red lights.

First off you do the same thing at stop signs, blinking red lights, and outed lamps. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. If you dont know what to do at a stop light then you should reread your drivers ed handbook.

Second, communicate. Is this dude about to go? If so, dont push on the gas pedal or walk into the street.

If you are on your feet and there is a blinking red light, the sign will not tell you to walk. Do what you do at a stop sign. If you dont have the common sense then whatever, get hit. Darwin at his
best.

If you are in the crosswalk and a car starts coming, STOP. If the driver proceeds to yell at you, smile and flip them off.

and most of all...
DO NOT VS BUSES!!!

they tend to win when things get physical.

Adam and other blondes


Todays blog is about my fat boyfriend Adam...and golden retrievers.

So first golden retrievers...cause these golden puppies are cute.

So every time I take a test stating which dog breed I am, I always get golden retriever. Maybe its a sign that I should get one haha.

I dunno. Im still more of a greyhound person. Rather not have a dog be active indoors. Maybe a super old golden retriever is what I should get. Or one named Doug

So now that Im passed the cute puppy picture...lets talk about Adam.

Yesterday, Adam ate a half a gallon of Chinese food. Isnt he fat? I had a subway sandwich and a pop tart...and he called ME fat.

So he said he would work out and get his six pack back. Well then he went on to say that he had a scary six pack.

In that case, Id rather keep you fluffy hon.

Although I do like the bumpy feel up abs. Hed get a lot more belly rubs...

...like a golden retriever...

So I guess he can now be golden Adam.

But Id probably leave him if he became severely obese. Im sorry but Im not sexually attracted to people that look like this

And Id probably lose all interest.

And dont say Im shallow (although maybe a little). I like to be active and obviously someone that got to the point of that person in the pic isnt for me.

But squishy is VERY attractive to me. =]

Its probably why I dont like myself that much...cause I see myself above squishy and go "EWW WTF" all the time and I wonder why I was the same as a child and my parents never did anything about it.

But then I look...and see that they are just too effing lazy to make good food or enforce going outside every now and then.

Id really love to get my own place with a gym. How many of you would just come over to use the gym...besides Adam? I totally wouldnt mind and if there was a pool Id have extra towels for EVERYONE!!

LED Lettuce The HydroTower And LED Humboldt Hydroponics

Tonights blog post has two tales of LED grow lights and the planting of a seed for a future collaborative project in the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group.

On July 11, Wired had an article titled, "LED-lit indoor farm produces 10,000 lettuces a day." Because several members of the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group have expressed an interest in using microcontrollers (MCUs) for automated or indoor plant growing, the LED lettuce article caught my interest. The Wired article presents some pretty impressive statistics.
"A newly opened indoor farm in Japan has been built with LEDs that emit light at wavelengths optimal for plant growth...Its 2,300 square metres, making it the worlds largest LED-illuminated indoor farm, and is already producing 10,000 heads of lettuce per day. The LED lamps allow Shimamura to adjust the day-night cycle for the plants, allowing them to photosynthesise during the day and respire at night. Discarded produce is cut from 50 percent of the harvest on a conventional farm to ten percent, and the lettuces grow two and a half time faster...stringent climate control means that water usage is just one percent of the amount needed by outdoor fields."
I can understand that the indoor growing and carefully controlled ambient conditions would reduce the amount of water to grow plants compared to outdoors. But it seems a real stretch to believe that the LED lettuce farm only uses 1% of what would be used for an outdoor lettuce farm!

The second LED grow light project took place in my hometown -- Grand Rapids, Michigan. That project was the HydroTower, the senior design project for a group of Calvin College students. The HydroTower was a fully automated hydroponic garden for home use, using an MCU for control and LED lights to enable photosynthesis and plant growth. This MCU / LED grow project popped up in a Google search after I read the LED lettuce article. Since the HydroTower happened in Grand Rapids, it seemed appropriate to find out a little more. The Calvin College alumni magazine Spark says this about the HydroTower:
"In October, the team researched hydroponics, learning about the floating, misting, and flood-and-drain (ebb-and-flow) methods of growing...their HydroTower would be constructed of a 20-by-32-by-32 inch base unit, to house the electronics and plumbing, and two open growing levels, each measuring 24 by 32 by 32 inches. The unit would operate on an ebb-and-flow system, and it would irrigate the plants and dispense nutrients automatically...In November, Team HydroTower broke the project into components, and each student engineer took one. DeKock would construct the

tower. Kirkman would engineer the water and piping. Vonk would create the LED system, using only red and blue lights because those are the only colors of the spectrum that plants absorb. Meyer would program the microcontroller that controls the LED lighting, the pump and valves, and the touch-screen user interface. And Eelkema would create the pH and electroconductivity sensors that handle nutrient control—a system, the team emphasized, that sets HydroTower apart from other hydroponic farms. “The sensors would input into a microcontroller, which would then use algorithms to decide which nutrients need to be replenished,” Eelkema explained. “The only problem with that is the biology and chemistry research is far more advanced than we have time to cover. Right now I am shooting for a best guess that I know won’t kill the plants
."
The Calvin College students project website gives this final update on the project:
"All through April and the first week of May Team HydroTower worked...to finish the prototype. The month of April saw the addition of our second growing level and some new plants. Other major accomplishments made before Design Night were completion of the pH and EC sensors, a working User Interface on the touchscreen...On May 7th the Engineering department held their annual Senior Design Open House where the team answered questions and took comments about the HydroTower. Later that evening the team gave a presentation detailing some of the work and challenges they faced during the past year...HydroTower is a finalist in the IEEE Presidents Change the World Competition. The project has been selected as one of 15 finalist entries and the top three winners will be announced at the end of May."
Humboldt Laser Harp v.1.0 nearly finished
It seems like the first collaborative project from the Humboldt Microcontrollers Group, the Humboldt Laser Harp v.1.0 (HLH), is well under way. Ed Smith said today that the HLH was being played by his kids in his kitchen. We will no doubt be working on improvements to HLH v.1.0, and at some point will start planning for v.2.0.

But this seems like a good time to plant a seed for another MCU group project. And a project involving some type of hydroponics and LEDs seems like a good target. Ill be reaching out to a few people to see if they want to work on that kind of a project. OHara maple syrup festival


OHara tapped trees in maple forest

We decided to take a trip to the OHara maple sugar festival and see what it was all about, and let me tell you, it can be described in one word, maplelicious... thats a word, right?
In goodol Madoc is where you can find this feast of all things maple. Hankering for some pancakes laced in syrup, you gotem. Drizzed maple syrup candy-pops made over snow, gotem. Maple butter, candies, and syrup for sale, you betcha!. It all starts off on a horse drawn ride through the maple forest, then, a trip back in time through an old pioneer house to show you the instruments used to collect sap. They also have old knickknacks for sale, everything from quilts to cast iron hooks.

I just love these old pioneer houses, any log homes for that matter. These modern homes with steel beams and fake formaldehyde filled flooring just feels.... blah.
Ive always wanted a fireplace like this, just right there, no safety, keeps ya on your toes I suppose, lol.
The house was filled with treasures from yesteryear; wooden water buckets, snow shoes, old fashioned saws, candy presses, and all sorts of tools that were essential to life back then. To be honest, alot of the stuff they had there I would prefer to what we have today. Plastic this and plastic that, I see why they were healthier then my generation.

I couldnt help but turn this photo in a vintage like feel. The wooden piece beside the wooden buckets was used to make candies, I think thats what the piece at the far left is too. There is a large screw beside the candy box that was used to drill the trees for sap and the wooden taps ( to the left of the screw ) were used to collect the sap from the trees, all of which dripped into wooden buckets. Wood, wood, wood,  does a body good.

For some reason whenever I see stuff like this I always want to try it out; it takes every ounce of my strength to not ask, I know they never would let me, and I know I shouldnt because Id probably break them, but I want to, oh lord how I want to.

 I always thought maple butter was maple syrup and butter mixed, and since I gave up butter, I never tried it. Turns out, its just maple syrup made in a specific, scientific like way. Its almost like soft maple candies, but smoother, more spreadable. In fact, right now I am eating this on a piece of bread with a mug full of how water and maple syrup -Canadian to the bone.

They have this neat watermill and log building, Im not sure if its functional but I will definitely be coming back to see this place in the summer as there are a bunch of festivals and things going on when the warmer weather arrives; fingers crossed the mill flows.

Daemons Car duino Tracker

Daemon by Daniel Suarez is an excellent book for most people who are interested in microcontrollers (MCUs), and Im currently in the middle of re-reading it. The MCU project in todays post, OpenTracker v2, is something that would have been right at home in Daemon.

OpenTracker (well drop the v2 suffix for the rest of this post) is an Arduino-based GPS / GLONASS vehicle tracker. The August 21 article in Electronics Weekly gives an overview of OpenTracker and mentions a couple use cases.
"This one could of interest to a Gadget Master looking to track moving objects, such as a vehicle. Want to monitor your elderly parent, perhaps, or keep an eye on your son or daughter’s first driving adventures...The people behind it, Tigal, are raising funds on the Indiegogo crowd-funding website...it’s actually the second version of the firm’s open source GPS/GLONASS vehicle tracking system...As well as tracking single or multiple vehicles, it also monitors the speed and altitude of the objects...The Arduino Due compatible module has an Atmel SAM3A8C ARM controller, a Quectel M95 GSM/GPRS modem and a Quectel L76 GPS/GLONASS module..."
OpenTracker v1
TIGAL just completed their Indiegogo effort to fund the development and launch of the second version of this moving object tracking device. Their Indiegogo campaign raised only €3,319 toward their funding goal of €50,000, so the new version of OpenTracker didnt get quick or strong uptake in the maker community or the general public. Because the Indiegogo effort was a flexible funding project, TIGAL, the developer of OpenTracker, keeps the money pledged. Also, TIGAL is an established Austrian company that sells the first version of OpenTracker online, as well as other products. The first version can be found online for €118.80 including 20% VAT.

Based on the online description of their company, TIGAL will likely continue development of the trackers second version in spite of not reaching their crowdfunding goal. It will likely take longer for the second version to become available, so if youre interested in this open source  moving object tracker, you should probably just buy the first version to learn on while waiting for the second one to appear. If you do interesting hacks with v1, TIGAL might want to have you be a beta tester for v2. Their website describes the company this way:

If youre considering buying or building a GPS tracker, you might also want to look at a few of the
other open source trackers. I didnt do in-depth research to find out which have the best reputation, but here are a few links to get you started:

Were selling the bare bones board here for development, however to take full advantage of its capabilites youll still need...accessories...The board also comes preloaded with firmware to use as a tracking device.  Communication is handled simply by send an SMS from your smart phone."

    ." Heres a link to the project status page on their wiki. They appear to have completed a Rev C PCB (printed circuit board) for their tracker in June 2014.

This could come in handy for travel abroad so youll be able to locate that out-of-the-way Parisian cafe later. It can also be used to track bike routes, commutes, or just about any travel adventure."
  4. Adafruit Ultimate GPS on the Raspberry Pi -- From Martin OHanlons blog post about this Adafruit GPS tracker: "I got myself one of adafruits ultimate GPS breakout boards as I want to experiment with capturing GPS data in my car projects.  Its a seriously good bit of
    Adafruit Ultimate GPS on Raspberry Pi
    kit and if you looking for a GPS module you could do a lot worse than this.  They also have an excellent tutorial on setting it up with the raspberry pi...I used the raspberry pis on board UART to connect to the GPS module, Adafruit advocate using a USB to serial device but that didnt suit my needs (I need the USB for other things). I also create a GPSController class in python to allow me to communicate with the module easily
    ."
Ive never done a maker project with GPS tracking, but it appears there are a number of options for doing that with open source designs. If you want to track your child, your parent or a potentially wayward or nefarious client (I have no idea as to the legalities of any of those activities and IANAL) or if you want to clearly understand how someone might be tracking you, this post should at least point you in the right direction...

Calamondins and Key limes, what a way to start the day, especially during cold and rainy April. While some curl there face when they eat a cala whole, Me on the other hand, gobble these up like candy at christmas. Key limes are another favourite of mine, in fact, limes, dare I say, are my favourite. Something about there taste sends my brain on a joyride. The smell of a fresh picked persian lime is no less then a oceanic blast of citrus heaven, leaving you unsure of whether or not you want to eat it or smell it all day long. This love for limes has actually lead me to start a few from seed just to see what happens ( red finger lime + Indian sweet lime). I am still in wonder of the finger limes as I have yet to try these little beauties, actually, I have yet to try any of the varieties from Australia due to there tight restrictions on selling live plants internationally. I believe this has changed somewhat as Im starting to see things pop up online. The only way I was able to get the red finger limes was from ebay. It was a year or more now and I have forgotten the seller and the account I used to order,lol. But from what I wrote down, It was the wild red type from the rain forest. One of the only varieties to grow true from seed, with the red colour holding in the inner pulp, even if its not true from seed, the chance of something new is just as interesting and I dont mind waiting 4-7 years to find out, in this case I believe, good things come to those who wait.

If anyone out there has an Australian citrus there selling/trading IM INTERESTED !!
Even if its seeds. I would love to get my hands on an outback lime!!.

So to cap off the night, I figure it calls for a home grown salad with homemade Calamondin dressing and a key lime beer ( HOORAAA!! for MILL ST).
