How To Sex Tilapia

Left is male/right is female
Sexing tilapia is sometimes important
So once your aquaponics is set up and all the problems are solved and the vegetables are growing, the fish is happy and then...you think, well I think I am finally at a point that I can sell some of my fish. (note once you do this it might ruin the great hobby of it and turn it into business of it. youll see) So to get the best results and profit you will need to figure out whats what in the tilapia sex world.

Most farmers wish to only cultivate males. Male tilapias grow bigger faster and yield a higher profit for aquacultures. So as soon as possible the males are recognized and the females are separated out. Sexing of tilapia is tricky and requires practice. Even experienced professionals will normally get a small percent wrong.

When a tilapia fingerling has reached a weight of 1 ounce it can generally be sexed by looking at the genital papilla. The genital papilla is located right behind the anus of the fish. If the genital papilla has one opening you are looking at a male tilapia.

Males have only one opening and both urine and milt will pass through this hole. If you observe two openings, then you are looking at a female tilapi. This is because tilapia eggs do not pass through the same hole as urine.

If youre inexperienced and are having a hard time, try placing a drop of dye, such as food coloring  on the genital region. The color should make it easier to distinguish the openings.

We usually place the females in another tank and from there we can decide to continue to let them breed (most of the time) or sell or give them away. If you have chickens, these small fish are perfect snacks and add high protein to the poultrys diet. It doesnt give the eggs a bad taste either as long as you are not feeding the chicken only fish for its diet. We suggest giving the females away to young people as a introduction to aquaponics and gardening.

If you are looking for tilapia, that is fairly easy.
You can find it in the search engines by putting in "where to buy tilapia".

I use two different companies and both seem to have good prices and great quality.

dear everyone

This is about people...most of you in fact. You know who you are. I mean Im so serious about people reading this its even going on Myspace...

Its about people and other peoples boyfriends. Lets start with subject one.

So people dont really like her boyfriend...yeah we got it. I know you all think she deserves better...but ok its GREAT to say that she deserves better. I mean no harm there. HOWEVER suggesting that she leaves her boyfriend and even encouraging it is rediculous. She has heard our suggestions...now she can decide for herself. She is a big girl.

Ok and subject two.

People dont like her boyfriend either because...well a number of reasons...like he changed her or all of a sudden she has gone mega religious.

Well ok

Here is what KILLS me about you guys.

You say "how can you trust and love someone so much when you dont even really know them?" Thats basically what you say right? I mean the pics are old and it could totally be some old dude effing around right?

So far everyone who says this believes in God...someone you dont know and there is no real proof of his existence except some other dude told you and wrote a book on him...

sounds a little contradictory to me....

Not saying she is right or that you guys are wrong...I just think its an INCREDIBLY stupid reason to leave people behind. I mean what if this is all just bullshit? The last thing someone needs is to hurt all by themselves. If anything everyone should be giving her MORE support even if you do think it is bullshit.

Now Im not trying to preach to anyone...just saying. I mean Im pretty vocal about not believing in God yet none of you rub it in my face? Why are you smearing their faces in your beliefs?

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND!!!!

How to get through an intersection with no lights blinking red light

I was waiting for my bus today when PG&E shut off the power to the intersection. The turn lights completely shut off and the normal lights were blinking...typically what happens when street lamps are reset.

...

First few minutes, no fails. Good job. The first fail started when someone went into the turn lane and stayed there...for a very...long...time....as if she couldnt see that the stop light next to it was blinking!!!

So she finally goes. I notice that there is a guy at the cross walk waiting to cross...as if he couldnt see the giant blinking red lights. He continued to push the button to cross the street.

>.>

Then a lady came and tried to do the same thing but finally crossed. He jogged across along with her.

AND THEN

a car jumped in front of another car (this actually happened about five times from the fifteen minutes I was at the stop) as if the other car was supposed to wait when they had the right away.

OK so heres my guide to surviving outed street lamps and blinking red lights.

First off you do the same thing at stop signs, blinking red lights, and outed lamps. THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE. If you dont know what to do at a stop light then you should reread your drivers ed handbook.

Second, communicate. Is this dude about to go? If so, dont push on the gas pedal or walk into the street.

If you are on your feet and there is a blinking red light, the sign will not tell you to walk. Do what you do at a stop sign. If you dont have the common sense then whatever, get hit. Darwin at his
best.

If you are in the crosswalk and a car starts coming, STOP. If the driver proceeds to yell at you, smile and flip them off.

and most of all...
DO NOT VS BUSES!!!

they tend to win when things get physical.

How to Cycle Aquaponics

Starting Up (Cycling) Your Aquaponics System

This article was borrowed from our friends at The Aquaponics Source

Bacteria are the carburetor of an aquaponics system that takes the otherwise unusable fish waste and creates a near perfect plant fertilizer. In this article I will demystify the process of establishing a beneficial bacteria colony in your aquaponics system. This process is often called system “cycling”. By the end of this article you will fully understand what you MUST do to initiate cycling and to ensure its success. You will also understand what you CAN do to both make the process less stressful for your fish and your plants, and to speed up the process.

What is Cycling?

Aquaponics System cyclingCycling starts when you (or your fish) first add ammonia to your aquaponics system. Ammonia (chemical formula NH3) is a compound made of nitrogen and hydrogen. It can come either from your fish or from other sources. Ammonia is toxic to fish and will soon kill them unless it is either diluted to a non-toxic level or converted into a less toxic form of nitrogen. In addition, nitrogen in the ammonia form is not readily taken up by plants, so no matter how high the ammonia levels get in your fish tank; your plants will not be getting much nutrition from it.
The good news is that ammonia attracts nitrosomonas, the first of the two nitrifying bacteria that are present in the air and will populate the surfaces of your system. The nitrosomonas bacteria convert the ammonia into nitrites (NO2) (the golden line in the chart above). This is a necessary step in the cycling process; however, nitrites are even more toxic than ammonia! But there is good news because the presence of nitrites attracts the bacteria we are truly after – nitrobacter. Nitrospira convert the nitrites into nitrates (represented by the green line in the chart above), which are generally harmless to the fish and excellent food for your plants.
Once you detect nitrates in your water and the ammonia and nitrite concentrations have both dropped to .5 ppm or lower, your system will be fully cycled and aquaponics will have officially begun!

The Importance of Testing Tools

API Freshwater Master Test Kit
API Freshwater Master Test Kit
You must have some way of telling where you are in the cycling process – typically a four to six week endeavor. Specifically, you must monitor ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels as well as pH so that you know that all these elements are “in range”. If they are not, you may need to take corrective action. This is also the only way that you will know when you are fully cycled and ready to add your fish. Plus, watching the daily progress of the cycling process is fascinating and something you can only see through the lens of a test kit. By the way, once you reach the point that your system is fully cycled, you will need to do much less monitoring than during the cycling process. So get through the cycling process and look forward to reaping the fruits (… or should we say the fish) of your labor.
To do their testing, most aquaponic gardeners use a product by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals Inc. called the API Freshwater Master Test Kit. This kit is easy to use, is inexpensive, and is designed for monitoring the cycling process in fish systems.
You will also need a submersible thermometer to measure your water temperature. Temperature affects both the cycling rate and the health of your fish and plants once you are up and running. See more on this below.

Starting the Cycling Process

Once you have your aquaponics system set up and your test kit in hand all you need to do to start the cycling process is add a source of ammonia. Traditionally this has been by adding fish and letting their waste be the ammonia, but I’m not a big fan of using fish as an ammonia source. Instead I prefer a technique called “Fishless Cycling” where an external source of ammonia is added to your aquaponics system. Why is this?
Nitrogen Cycle
Typical Nitrogen Cycle
First, both you and your fish will likely experience much less stress because you will not be trying to keep anybody alive during the process. Second, you can more precisely control how much ammonia is added to your system during the process. For example, if you see that your ammonia level is creeping up to 8 ppm, but no nitrites have shown up yet, just stop adding ammonia for a few days and let the bacteria catch up. You can’t do this with fish!

The practical result of this is that with Fishless Cycling you can fully stock your tank once cycling is complete, versus gradually increasing your stocking levels as is recommended when cycling with fish. This is especially beneficial to those who are growing aggressive or carnivorous fish because they are less likely to attack each other if they are all introduced to the tank at the same time.

Cycling Without Fish

There are several ways to add ammonia to your system, but honestly the best is to simply purchase our Cycling Kits.  They come in 3 sizes – Small (< 100 gallons), Medium (100 – 300 gallons) and Large (300 – 500 gallons).  They come with all the ammonia you will need to fully cycle the corresponding size tank, powdered seaweed to provide a rich supply of micronutrients to get your plants off to a great start, and detailed instructions.
With Fishless Cycling you can add safely fish to your aquaponics system after your ammonia and nitrite levels drop to zero, or close to it, and you have measurable levels of nitrates.  This tells you that both the ammonia converting bacteria (nitrosomonas) and the nitrate converting bacteria (nitrospira) have become fully established and are ready to efficiently process fish waste.

Speeding up Cycling

Unfortunately nitrifying bacteria are some of the slowest growing bacteria in nature, and the cycling process can take as long as six weeks. There are a few things you can do to speed up this process, however.
• Temperature – like most microorganisms, nitrifying bacteria multiply more quickly in warmer conditions. Their optimal temperature is between 77-86°F (25-30°C). At 64°F (18°C) their growth rates is decreased by 50%. At 46-50°F (8-10 °C) it decreases by 75%, and stops all together at 39°F (4°C). It will die off at or below 32°F (0°C) and at or above 120°F (49°C).
• pH – Bacteria prefer a pH range between 7 – 8. Use hydroponic pH up and down products to keep your pH in this range during cycling.
• Oxygen – Nitrifying bacteria are aerobic and will multiply much faster under highly oxygenated conditions. Even if you are cycling without fish be sure to have as much oxygen in your tank water as you would if the fish were there. Think of the bacteria as just another living organism that requires oxygen in your system.
• Adding bacteria – You can “jump start” the process by adding bacteria from an existing colony. Good sources of beneficial bacteria are ranked here, leading with the best (the lower you go on the list the more chance you have of introducing a disease into your system):
  • Our Microbe Lift Nitrifying Bacteria product (included with the Cycling Kits)
  • Media from an existing aquaponics system.
  • Filter material (floss, sponge, biowheel, etc.) from an established, disease-free aquarium.
  • Gravel from an established, disease-free tank (Many local pet and aquarium stores will give this away if asked.).
  • Other ornaments (driftwood, rocks, etc.) from an established aquarium.
  • Squeezings from a filter sponge (any pet and aquarium store should be willing to do this…).
  • Rocks from a backyard pond with fish in it.
  • Rocks from a river, lake or wild pond.

When to add plants

MaxiCropWe recommend adding plants as soon as you have started the cycling process.  The reason for this is that it gives the plants some time to put down roots and establish themselves before the fish are introduced and nitrates need to be absorbed.

this and that

It seems that any pet I get is either black, white, or both. Not sure why, its just the way I role I guess.

Besides that, my day was full of this and that, mostly love and hate.

Typically Id use Google Chrome, but it wouldnt let me play Dr. Mario for some reason...so I used Firefox. I started blogging on my other blog and got about 2000 words on there when I had to leave my internet source.

Unfortunately I was using Windows. Today, it made me hate it more. While I was on the way back here (Adams grandmas house) Windows decided to restart for God knows why (last time I checked it already updated) and, of course, closed every program without asking me.

I logged back on and Firefox restored about 500 of my words on my blogger. Good Firefox. But damn thats a lot missing.

Now this is why I love blogger. It saved my draft all the way up to the 2000th word. WIN!!!

And Its still love/hate between Dr. Mario. BLEH.

Dear readers

I checked my stats and am upset.

Id like to say hello to the French readers out there. Turns out a good portion of my audience is French!!!  You guys have a beautiful country and language by the way.  No chance that Im being overly nice either!
So here is to the French.  Thanks guys!

Now even more interesting is that most people got here via Google search engine.  Well I guess it isnt a surprise seeing as Blogger itself is a Google tool.  The top two things that bring people here?

"zebra brown white stripes"
"portal cake ingredient list"

hahaha.  Now I had the actual ingredients and how to for an edible version of the portal cake.  In fact, there is a hard way from scratch and an easy way from instant cake stuff (like the box cake mix.)

But what truly gets me going...the fact that over 75% of you are using Internet Explorer.

This disgusts me.

Most of you are also on Windows which is understandable but IE????

How to wear a shirt

Should I return the map??

First Id like to announce that I pray for the day where I found out Im adopted...as my family is too stupid for me to be related to...

And my sister...beyond annoying. I mean damn...act your age, not my shortest friends shoe size (which is 6 I believe)

Anyway...was playing some Earthbound a while ago...great game.

So what brings me to the internet today is a little different. I have actually come here to try to figure out how to wear a shirt.

yep you read that right.

Its mostly because I have an interview with Macys...a clothing store...and dont want to look too stupid there.

So its the perfectionist coming out in me.

well its more like Im looking for what to wear. Do I wear something on the more casual me-ish side or do I completely dress to impress?

I have yet to tell my family cause they are soooo fucking annoying that Id rather be homeless than deal with them squealing like headless pigs about me needing to look perfect.

Everybody loves

I grew up in a college town, and one Halloween our doorbell rang and we opened the door expecting to see trickortreater—but what was in front of our open door—was another door! Like, a full-on wooden door, that had a sign that said “Please knock.” So we did, and the door swung open to reveal a bunch of college dudes dressed as really old grandmothers, curlers in their hair, etc, who proceeded to coo over our “costumes” and tell us we were “such cute trick or treaters!” One even pinched my cheek. Then THEY gave US candy, closed their door, picked it up and walked to the next house. MLIA

Really that has nothing to do with anything...just an idea of what people should do for Halloween.

Anyway I had Del Taco for the first time today....not bad. Everyone loves Americanized Mexican food. Its not American...its not Mexican...Its Mexamerican.

So It wasnt as bad as people made it seem but wasnt as good either. Its style is like Taco Bell but taste wise...was like a mix between Taco Bell and Chipotle.

<3

Lately some family has really been on me to have kids...for some reason. "Mixed kids are so cute" theyd say. Well my cousins are mixed...arent they enough to look at? Since Im multiracial myself and possess less African decent features (such as small nose, smaller lips, and hair that grows fairly fast) I guess they really want a mixed kid with less black features. Odd to say since my cousins have very little features as well (one of four have kinky hair, one curly, one wavy, and one dead straight) but man thats asking a lot of me I think. For some reason, everyone thinks mixed kids are the CUTEST! Well there are some less attractive as well Im sure. On top of that, people typically mean caramel colored kids with kinky curls or soft waves. Unfortunately, a good portion of kids dont look like that. Me, for example. Yes my hair grows fast and no it isnt really kinky like black hair. Its naturally soft, not rough and holds moisture better. I also inherited a god awful greasy scalp. Most of my family looks fairly multiracial although they claim black (which I think is out of their ignorance...not out of actual pride for something they are....kinda not really.) My sister is much lighter than I am and my mom is extremely pale. Me, Im dark. Who says my kids, although dad is white, will also be light or even caramel?

How Good are Blogs

WebLogs IMHO are the best compromise that has developed on the net. Not quite a Web Site, One Giant Leap beyond an email. The thing is though, they provide information that is updatable and is held for reference where it can be found. Some blogs ar little more than Diaries or notepads while others are closer to Websites than many that call themselves sites.

I guess this one sits wherever I want it on any given day. I just continue to hope that the information it provides, lies in the realm that includes or covers your interest or curiosity. This is the reason it tends to jump around somewhat with the type of content as well as the depth of information. So although I am trying to satisfy people who are by now well into living their life around their Aquaponic System by providing links to sites or blogs that deal with a huge range of problematic issues, I still like to touch on the little blogs put up by people who are still way back in the thinking about it stage.

The third area I like to tap into is the more technical area like the the guys who are right up on the more technical issues associated with water quality, bacteria life cycles, fish diseases and of course naturally dealing with plant disease and pests.

So if your needs as yet have not been met, just hang in there and if you have an issue or two let me know and Ill try to chase it up for you. Because some time, someone else is going to thank us both for providing the answer to their needs. Aquaponics is like a whole new world and we are the lucky ones who have chosen to get on this bus very early and Im still guessing where its going to take us and all who come after us.

Im not joking about this, just look at the countries on my counter. People everywhere are looking to Aquaponics as a means to their end, to fill their particular need.

This Blog was only started this year and look at the growth. Doesnt that tell you something. I know it tells me that A/P is like the proverbial snowball rolling down the hill. Every rotation it takes, it grows because every newcomer finds the answers and those answers are reachable and achievable with A/P.

O.K. Im off the bandwagon... Sorry about that.....

LETS DO THE THING....

Why people are poor and how we fix it

I have limited this to America simply because every country is different.  People are poor here for two main reasons.
  1. hard times
  2. stupidity
Stupidity often leads to ignorance.  Ignorance is the worst thing that could happen to anything.  But before I go on, let me tell everyone what sparked this today.

I dont live in the best neighborhood.  This is mostly because of my own stupidity.  I could move.  I could do this and that...but I havent.  Why?  Because of my own patience.  Sometimes things are good to wait for.  This isnt quite one of them.  Since I have realized this bad move, I have worked for a way to get out.  Anyway, I was walking the dogs today with no problem.  My neighbor and I chatted up a bit.  This guy, awesome.  He lives here because he has a family to take care of and it was a cheap house with an extremely large yard.  He has two large pit bulls that arent walked, but played with for hours a day while some of the family tends to the garden in the back.  As I walked further down the street, I came across a dog nearly hopping the fence.  Two things could have happened
  1. the dog wouldnt have made it
  2. the dog would have had his face smashed in because Im not the kind of person that stands there screaming "oh no stop please!"
The dog didnt make it.  The dog wasnt the problem.  The owner standing in the yard that let her dogs jump all over her and became nervous at the sight of me walking by was the problem.  A weak owner should either man up or not have two large, aggressive breeds.  She probably got them as cute puppies.  Stupidity.  However she didnt fix this stupid move one bit.  Nope, they grew up to own her.  What made me even more mad was the neighbor that commented "almost ol boy!"  I question if she would have said the same thing if the dog did jump the fence and I did, to protect my pack, injured him.  Ignorance.

So why are people poor in America?

Well lets rephrase this.  Why do people stay poor in America?

First, lets look at the definitions of poor (used in our context of course.)

Merriam-Websters definition of poor (of course Oxford you have to pay for and the free dictionary isnt working for me at this time.)
  1. lacking material possessions
  2. small in worth
  3. less than adequate
No wonder why everyone is money hungry and materialistic.  People dont want to be "less than adequate" but instead happy and...adequate.

Anyone taking Economics may come across this interesting thing called standard of living and another thing called quality of life.  These things, interestingly enough, do not like each other.  When standard of living is high, quality of life is low and vice versa.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN PEOPLE IN THE SLUMS ARE HAPPIER THAN PEOPLE IN MANSIONS???!?!

It isnt just worldwide.  Often "poor" people in the country are happier than people financially happy and with more possessions in urban/suburban areas.  There is much less crime in the country and it has nothing to do with nature or living far apart.

These poor people (living in those purple mountains of the US or those hills of China) have one thing many city folk have forgotten about.  They have communities and family that are willing to be there for them.  Im not dissing city folk (after all, I was raised suburban and have lived suburban my entire life) but we seem to be so into what we dont have.  Many minimalists (the lifestyle, not the fashion/music/anything of those sorts) are catching on as well.  Less is more.  Besides, our real friends and good family dont care what we have or how messy our living room is.

In short, how do I think we should fix poor?  Stop being so damn materialistic.  I can spew on about being eco friendly which, with knowledge on how to not be scammed, comes out being much cheaper but that isnt what this post is about.  In fact, I will probably blog that next.

In this wonderful country we call home, we do need some income.  We dont own anything for fuck sake and when we do own it 100%, there is usually some law keeping an eye on it.

HOW TO STOP BEING POOR pt 1

Do yourself a favor and be eco friendly (more on that in the next blog.)  What you need and what you want are two different things.

HOW TO STOP BEING POOR pt 2

This requires more than just yourself.  Go to a farmers market or a local farm to shop.  Buy from local stores.  Yes this costs more but think of it this way.

yummy!Wal Mart opens a new store and it creates 200 local jobs plus temporary jobs for construction workers.

A family shop opens a very large store of the same size and it only buys products from other family owned shops.  It creates 200 local jobs plus more jobs for those shops that it is getting product from.  It encourages more local practices.  This also means less people need to be on welfare or need financial assistance because we opened up more than 200 jobs.  Tada!  Less taxes we have to spew out.

HOW TO STOP BEING POOR pt 3

Knowledge.  Yeah simple.  Dont be stupid or impulsive.  Since dogs and cats are a big pet peeve of mine, I will use them as an example.

We buy a puppy from a pet store which likely came from a puppy mill.  This has helped our local economy but not in a good way.  The greedy owner just wants your money and doesnt care about you.  Same with a free

Puppy mills often get tax evasions

kitten.  We encourage these people to allow animals to breed thus more die in shelters.  Putting animals down isnt cheap but county and city shelters usually get some sort of government help.  Tada...minus more tax money!  A little research goes a long way.

how to brush comb your hair

because apparently people dont know how.

So basically I have been watching this girl from 15 feet away brush her hair furiously!

Honestly brushing it fast and rough makes split ends and tangles come even faster...and more furious.

so for you people with straight hair or curly hair that youd rather not properly take care of...here is how to brush your hair

step 1
pick up your brush

step 2
grab some hair

step 3
brush it from the bottom and work your way up

step 4
slowly detangle knots from the bottom

TIP
never brush wet hair as it will snag and could break.

see was that hard?

now for curlies

step 1
wet hair thoroughly (shower works best)

step 2
grab some hair

step 3
use a wide tooth comb to comb from the bottom up.

step 4
detangle from the bottom

tip
always comb wet hair. NEVER brush dry curly hair.

Tada

btw most hair doesnt need to be shampooed. Curlies only need to conditioned. Oily scalps can skip the conditioner and use only shampoo. Trust me on this
